Pirron Yallock combines a volcanic landscape with many traces of local history. Hawks Nest Road runs through the Stony Rises; elsewhere, railway station buildings, a homestead and a church tell stories of architecture and community life. Water and landscape also help define the area: Pirron Yallock is near Pirron Yallock Creek, which drains north into Lake Corangamite. When choosing a holiday rental, you might first consider whether you are mainly interested in the landscape route, the heritage, or both.

Stony Rises and Floating Islands

Hawks Nest Road is a winding gravel road distinguished by numerous lava flows along its 17-kilometre route. Between Pirron Yallock and Pomborneit, it passes through 15 kilometres of the Stony Rises. The road provides access through this area and views across the Stony Rises. The two lengths describe different things: 17 kilometres is the length of the road, while 15 kilometres is the section through the Stony Rises between the two towns. Check current route conditions before driving.

The Floating Islands lagoon lies about three kilometres west of Pirron Yallock. It is a public reserve and is partly enclosed by stone walls built between 1860 and 1880 to keep rabbits out. The Floating Islands can move freely when the water level is high enough: the lake bed is shallow and drops steeply at the sides. Their formation is thought to date to 1952. At that time, conditions changed from swampy to lake-like as the local water table rose above the volcanic plains.

This landscape offers more than a single viewpoint: the road provides a route through the Stony Rises, while the Floating Islands are notable for their potential movement. Those who want to get to know the area through its landforms will find distinct features here, from lava flows and bodies of water to the unusual islands. The Floating Islands lagoon is about three kilometres west of Pirron Yallock.

Buildings and traces of local history

The Pirron Yallock Railway Station Complex is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The complex includes the station building and a water tower, and is located on Penshurst-Warrnambool Road in Pirron Yallock. The protected complex therefore comprises both a building used for railway operations and the water tower. Its name refers to more than a single station building, offering a concrete point of interest for anyone interested in the town’s built heritage.

The Stony Rises Homestead Complex at 2020 Princes Highway includes an orchard hedge, walnut and pear trees, a detached cottage and stone walls. The walnut tree, Juglans regia, is of state significance and is listed as heritage by the National Trust. It appears to date from the pastoral runs era in Victoria and is a surviving example of an earlier orchard. Access is restricted; check locally whether a visit is possible before making plans. The Rabbit Canning Factory at Stony Rises Homestead is a rare building type that illustrates the height of the rabbit plague in the Stony Rises region.

St Joseph’s Church also reflects several layers of history. It opened in 1907. Historically, Sunday Masses were held there; after Mass, catechism classes for pupils of Swan Marsh State School took place every Sunday. The church was also the meeting place for a Children of Mary group, and Midnight Mass was once a highlight of its annual calendar. A 2021 description called the church an important part of Pirron Yallock’s small community.

The history is reflected here in different ways: in the listed railway station complex, in the features of the homestead, and in the church’s recorded use by the religious community. When planning your trip, it helps to treat these themes as separate experiences. The landscape and route form one focus; the buildings and their stories offer another. Choose your holiday rental search according to which aspects of Pirron Yallock are of particular interest to you on your trip.
