Hamilton in Victoria offers several distinct travel highlights: art at Hamilton Gallery, the history of Hamilton Botanic Gardens, activities at Lake Hamilton, and an insight into the development of the Ansett Group. For exercise, there is also the Hamilton to Coleraine Rail Trail, which is still being developed. You can shape your stay around culture, the water or an active outing. When looking for holiday accommodation in Hamilton, you can first consider which of these highlights you want to shape your stay.

Art and Garden History

Hamilton Gallery is recognised nationally and internationally for its exceptional collection and diverse exhibitions. This gives the art experience two distinct aspects: you can explore the collection while also taking in the breadth of the exhibition program. For younger visitors, there are art spaces for children with regularly changing activities; exhibition information is also specially tailored for them. Activities and information may change. If these offerings are important to your plans, it is worth checking what is currently available.

Hamilton Botanic Gardens are among the earliest regional botanical gardens established in Australia. William Guilfoyle designed the gardens, which are now considered an important part of Victoria’s cultural heritage. This gives the gardens more than just a place in time: the named attribution for their design also makes their history tangible. For travellers interested in culture, they offer an independent historical perspective on Hamilton alongside the gallery.

Lake Hamilton: Walking and Water Activities

Lake Hamilton lies at the eastern end of Hamilton and is surrounded by 25 hectares of parkland. A 4.2-kilometre path is used for walking and cycling. There are also activities on and around the lake: fishing, water skiing, sailing, rowing, windsurfing, canoeing and swimming are all possible. Options range from walking or cycling along the path to various water-based activities; which ones are suitable also depends on the conditions at the time.

An Insight into the History of the Ansett Group

The Sir Reginald Ansett Transport Museum is dedicated to transport and tourism pioneer Reg Ansett. He founded his transport company in 1931 in Hamilton, Victoria. The museum is housed in Ansett’s original aircraft hangar, which was moved to Hamilton, and displays more than 1,000 objects relating to the history of the Ansett Group. Two specific historical connections come together here: the company’s place of foundation and a collection devoted to its history. The museum offers a different focus from art and garden history, complementing Hamilton’s cultural attractions with transport and tourism history.

Get Active on the Rail Trail

The first section of the Hamilton to Coleraine Rail Trail starts on the outskirts of Hamilton and runs through working farms and a landscape of red gum trees to Wannon-Nigretta Falls Road. The trail is still being developed and is an option for endurance walkers and mountain bikers; conditions may change. Unlike the activities at Lake Hamilton, this route focuses on a longer outing through farmland and red gum country. Check the current trail status before setting out.

Planning Information

The Hamilton and Grampians Visitor Information Centre offers information about local experiences, as well as free brochures and regional maps. If you would like some guidance before choosing specific activities, this information and these maps can help with your planning. Facilities and services may change; check what is currently available if needed.
