Echuca
Accommodation in Echuca
Echuca brings together riverside scenery and a vivid history of Australia’s inland river system. Echuca Wharf is a site in Victoria listed on the National Heritage Register. The Port of Echuca is a living monument to the 1870s. Authentic paddle steamers, historic machinery and riverside paths offer different ways to explore this theme. For your trip, you can choose whether to discover Echuca mainly from the water, through its technical exhibits or on a walking tour.
Discover the history of the port and river
The Discovery Centre at the Port of Echuca shares the history of Australia’s inland river system and paddle steamers. The exhibits are about more than just the boats: they also include the Evans Brothers’ Sawmill, a working exhibit. The Steam Display adds another perspective on technology. There, visitors can see original working steam engines and pumps and meet the engineers who operate them. Anyone interested in the connection between river transport and technology will find several specific aspects to explore at the Port of Echuca.
Echuca Wharf can also be explored from more than one perspective: visitors can discover the wharf above and below and enjoy views along the Murray River. Authentic paddle steamers depart from Echuca Wharf every day. A one-hour trip on an authentic paddle steamer also departs from there. During the trip, commentary covers the history of the paddle steamer trade and Echuca Wharf. The wharf, the daily departures and the trip with its historical commentary offer different ways to explore the history of the river.
Museums and local history
The Echuca Historical Society Museum is located in the Historic Port Precinct, in a heritage-listed complex comprising a police station and lockup built in 1869. The complex is listed on the National Trust Register. The museum displays artefacts from riverboats. It complements the history of shipping with objects and a historic building complex, while the Discovery Centre focuses on Australia’s inland river system and paddle steamers.
The Echuca Historical Society also offers a one-hour guided historic walking tour through Echuca’s heritage area. If you would rather visit a collection with an unusual focus, you can include the Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum in Echuca in your plans: it displays more than 20,000 beer cans and related memorabilia. Guided tours are also available there. Visitors can choose from a range of themes, from riverboats and local history to an extensive collection centred on beer cans.
Explore the river and Echuca by bike
There are cycling routes of varying lengths and with different highlights. The easy ride to the Port of Echuca is 800 metres each way. The Campaspe River Shared Pathway is also classified as an easy ride: it runs for 3.5 kilometres each way along the Campaspe River. Two footbridges provide access back to the centre of Echuca. The Warren Street Shared Pathway is 3.5 kilometres each way and connects the west of Echuca.
A longer option is the 8.7-kilometre-each-way ride to Christie's Beach. For most of the route, paths run alongside the Murray River; there is also the chance to spot native wildlife. At the Echuca Back 9 Golf Course, tree-lined fairways follow the Campaspe River. Along with the historic attractions, this means there are also riverside routes and another activity by the water to consider. When choosing your holiday rental, you can first decide whether you want your stay to focus more on port and museum experiences or on cycling routes and river scenery.
