Culture and history in Dimboola
The Dimboola Imaginarium is housed in the historic former National Bank of Australasia building. Its offerings include art, curiosities, collectables, toys, books, plants and unique gifts. The Dimboola Printing Museum showcases old printing presses from across Australia. These include original presses that are all still in working order—a special detail for anyone interested in printing technology and historic equipment.
The Old Courthouse on Lloyd Street serves as the main archive and exhibition venue of the Dimboola and District Historical Society. Exhibitions in the courtroom cover local history, including Koori and Chinese cultures, the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, agriculture, justice, railways and clothing. A separate, focused exhibition is housed at Nolan Studio: it is a static display in the garage or studio where Sidney Nolan painted. The Dimboola Bicentennial Park is also home to the J539 steam locomotive. The Dimboola Railway Precinct has the only operational manual turntable between Melbourne and Adelaide.
The Wimmera River and trails
The Wimmera River was granted Heritage status under the Heritage Rivers Act 1992. The section downstream of Polkemmet Bridge runs through Dimboola and the district. One starting point for the Wimmera River Discovery Trail is behind the Dimboola Library. The Nine Creeks Walking and Bicycle Tracks offer four kilometres of walking trails for people of varying abilities. They include a boardwalk across the river and pedestrian bridges. Information signs along the trails provide insight into the area’s historical significance and its long-standing use by Indigenous, Chinese and European communities.
There are also specific places to visit outside town. Pink Lake is six kilometres north-west of Dimboola on the Western Highway; a short path leads from the car park to the lakeshore. The Horseshoe Bend Campground and picnic area is an eight-minute drive from Dimboola and is suitable for swimming or kayaking. These two destinations offer different reasons to explore the surrounding area during your trip.
Water, golf and a break in the greenery
Dimboola Recreation Reserve has facilities for swimming, rowing, fishing and canoeing. If you’d rather combine your stay with golf, there’s the Dimboola Golf Course, a sand-scrape course that runs along the Wimmera River. When choosing activities for the day, you can opt for a range of water sports or a round of golf.
Dimboola Library and Community Civic Hub offers visitors a place for a picnic, with landscaped gardens and lawns, seating and picnic tables. Public toilets are also available. It’s a separate option for an outdoor break, alongside the trails and riverside activities.
