Buninyong offers several ways to explore garden and local history, as well as self-guided trails. The Buninyong Botanic Gardens bring together several tour themes, while trails in Desoza Park and Union Jack Reserve offer different route options. Information about the Mt Buninyong Circuit can also help you choose a walk based on the time available and the distance. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay on gardens and historic buildings or on longer walks.

Gardens and local history

The Buninyong Botanic Gardens offer self-guided historical, educational, botanical and seasonal tours. Their different themes offer several ways to explore the gardens: you can focus on their history, plants or educational content. The seasonal tours add another perspective. The gardens were established in the 1860s and are listed by Heritage Victoria. They therefore combine a specific age with recognised heritage status.

Buildings from the 19th century are also part of Buninyong’s history; some date back to the early gold rush period. In early 2013, the Buninyong & District Historical Society and the Buninyong & District Community Association installed a series of plaques on historic buildings in Buninyong. The plaques explain the historical significance of each building. For those interested in local history, they provide another theme to explore alongside the gardens: the buildings and their historical significance on the one hand, and the gardens and their different tour themes on the other.

Walking circuits and hikes

A flat gravel path in Desoza Park runs along both sides of Union Jack Creek to form an easy circuit. It is suitable for strollers, wheelchairs and bicycles. The circuit is 3.7 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of about 1 hour and 10 minutes. It is rated Grade 1. This gives you specific information for planning your day: you can take the distance, approximate duration and rating into account and consider the circuit as a well-described, manageable walking option.

Union Jack Reserve is a 72-hectare bushland area on the northeastern side of Buninyong. It has two signed, self-guided walks. The longer walk includes the Locomotive Mine. If you prefer a trail through bushland to a circuit in a park, you can include these two signed walks in your plans as another option.

The Mt Buninyong Circuit is 11.5 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. These figures clearly distinguish it from the 3.7-kilometre circuit in the park when planning your route. The Buninyong Walk is part of the Wallaby Track section of the Goldfields Track. It starts at the eastern end of The Gong and leads to the summit of Mt Buninyong.

You can consider Buninyong as a destination when choosing holiday accommodation.
