Ballan offers several reasons to spend your days outdoors and discovering local attractions: the Werribee River flows through Caledonian Park, the Historic Tree Walk passes historic trees, and art, markets and golf add to the offerings. As you plan your trip, you can consider whether nature, walks, local produce or culture should shape your stay.

River and old trees at Caledonian Park

Caledonian Park covers 24.2 acres. The Werribee River flows from east to west through the park; you can walk along the river and admire the old trees on its banks. The river and the locations of the trees provide clear points of reference for your walk, rather than limiting your visit to a single activity. The park also has a large playground for families travelling with children. Its features include a wave slide and a curved slide, a climbing wall, tunnels and a ladder, a vertical square rope climbing frame, swings and a fireman’s pole.

The Ballan Historic Tree Walk offers another way to get to know Ballan’s trees. On this leisurely walk, you can admire the town’s historic trees. An interactive map guides you along the walk; QR codes at individual trees provide stories about them and horticultural information. This combines exercise with brief insights into the history and care of the trees. You can make the walk a focus of your visit if you’d like to explore Ballan on foot and take in its treescape.

Spring water and views

Ballan Mineral Spring Reserve is next to Bostock Reservoir. There are picnic tables with views of the eastern arm of the Moorabool River. The reserve offers a different natural setting from Caledonian Park: here, the reservoir, river views and spring water are part of the experience. The spring water is comparable to the water of the Hepburn Springs region. Visitors can fill their own containers with spring water to take away.

Art, markets and events

Special exhibitions and collections by members of the Ballan and District Artists Collective change regularly at Ballan Arts Space. The gallery shop is also open during the Collective’s exhibitions. It sells works by local artists and craftspeople. If art is one of your travel interests, Arts Space offers the chance to see work from the local creative scene as well as its exhibitions.

The Ballan Farmers Market takes place on the second Saturday of each month. There are usually at least 25 stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, regional produce, distinctive crafts, and artisan breads and pastries. The regular monthly date is a helpful point of reference when planning your trip; check whether your stay coincides with the second Saturday if you’d like to visit the market. The annual Ballan Autumn Festival takes place in March and is organised by the community, offering another event date to consider when planning.

Planning different days in Ballan

Golf is another option in the area. Ballan Golf Club offers a shady, tree-lined course that is mostly flat. A few short, steep climbs, river crossings and Santa Ana Couch greens are also among its features. These details give a different picture from a walk in the park or a visit to the Farmers Market: if golf is part of your plans, you can take the course’s described features into account when deciding.

When choosing a holiday rental or holiday home in Ballan, it helps to first decide what kind of trip you’re looking for. If you’re travelling with children, the playground and outdoor activities may appeal; for a culture-focused stay, consider the exhibitions and tree walk. If you’re interested in regional produce, you can plan around the monthly market day. This lets you tailor your accommodation search to the experiences that matter to you during your time in Ballan.
