At Cape Schanck, lighthouse history, distinctive rock formations and tracks through a varied landscape come together. A visit can take many different forms: climb to the lamp room on a guided tour, view Pulpit Rock and Devils Desk from lookout points, or focus on nature watching. This variety gives you flexibility when planning your day, without any single activity having to define your stay.

Lighthouse Built from Limestone and Sandstone

Cape Schanck Lighthouse was built from dressed limestone and sandstone; its original mechanisms are still in place. On a guided tour, visitors can climb the sandstone steps to the lamp room, which is still operational. If you plan to make this climb, check the current tour options beforehand.

Rock Formations and Different Walking Options

Several lookouts in Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve offer views of Pulpit Rock and Devils Desk. These two geological formations were shaped by volcanic and geological movements over millions of years. A walk to the tip of Cape Schanck leads to Pulpit Rock and impressive basalt cliffs.

The 2.6 km Bushrangers Bay Track begins east of the car park in Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve. A short circuit walk leads from the car park towards Cape Schanck to the start of a wooden staircase and boardwalk. From there, the staircase and boardwalk descend to the beach and rock platform. This gives you a choice between a route with a specified length and a short circuit walk that descends to the beach.

Orchids and Whale Watching

In spring, you can spot native orchids along the tracks. As whales migrate through Bass Strait, several lookouts at Cape Schanck offer opportunities for whale watching. These are different ways to enjoy nature: looking for plants along the tracks or watching migrating whales from the lookouts.
