Kangarilla: Wine, Tree Trail and History
Accommodation in Kangarilla
Kangarilla combines guided wine tastings with a signposted tree trail and local history shaped by community involvement and horticultural experiments. Its attractions range from relaxed tastings at your own pace to a hiking section rated as challenging.
Wine tastings in Kangarilla and the surrounding region
The Anvers winery team hosts relaxed wine tastings in Kangarilla, which you can enjoy at your own pace. Bookings are recommended for tastings at Anvers Wines. You can book by phone on (08) 7085 0615 or online. If you are planning a visit, check the booking method in advance.
Hickinbotham wine tastings take place at the new Yangarra Cellar Door next to the winery in Kangarilla. Together with Anvers, this gives wine enthusiasts two specific places to visit: Anvers focuses on guided tastings at a relaxed pace, while Hickinbotham’s tastings are held at the Yangarra Cellar Door.
The wider McLaren Vale travel region also has its own wine offering: Yangarra Cellar Door is in the northeastern part of the region. It offers guided premium tastings, and wines are available by the glass in the wine lounge. Seasonal events are also part of the offering, although the individual events vary.
The grandstand and garden history
The Kangarilla Grandstand comprises a grandstand built around 1924, a pavilion and changing rooms. The complex features freestone, as well as brick quoins, surrounds and decorative details. The place’s history is also reflected in how it came about: local residents donated funds and building materials for its construction. The complex has been in continuous use since it was completed.
The historic garden at Parkhurst in Kangarilla contains remnants of Captain Dashwood’s experimental plantings from the 1850s to the 1870s. The aim of the experiments was to find out which tree species would adapt to the local climate. The plantings are therefore a record of a specific horticultural question of their time, adding another chapter in local life to the Grandstand’s building history.
Tree trail and hike
In Kangarilla, you can follow a signposted tree trail; maps are available to download. Before setting out, check locally which map is current. The Willunga Environment Centre is responsible for the Kangarilla Tree Trail, Willunga Tree Trail and McLaren Vale Cellar Door Trail projects. The three project names offer different thematic points of interest, but do not imply a shared route.
Section 7 of the Willunga Basin Trail is a 16.2-kilometre challenging hike rated Grade 4. It ends at the intersection of Sand Road and McLaren Flat Road in Kangarilla. If you plan to hike this section, take its length and rating into account and check the trail operator’s latest advice on conditions and route status before setting out.
When looking for a holiday rental in Kangarilla, your planned holiday activities can help guide your choice: wine tastings, historic places and a challenging hike suit different interests. If Section 7 is part of your plans, take its length, rating and the latest trail updates into account.
