Tieri between mining history and nature
Accommodation in Tieri
Tieri combines a history closely linked to coal mining and the surrounding cattle stations with a variety of sporting activities and local wildlife. The Aquatic Centre, the Golf Club and the animals often seen here each give a trip its own focus. You can decide whether you’d like to explore Tieri mainly for its local history, for exercise or for wildlife watching.
A town shaped by mining and cattle stations
Tieri was established in 1983 on the “Crinum” cattle property as a town for miners and their families. This followed the start of coal mining at Oaky Creek Mine in the early 1980s. This history makes Tieri a town whose development is closely linked to working and living in the mining industry. If you’re interested in the town’s history, you can also look out for the names in the centre: the streets are named after the cattle stations that originally surrounded Tieri.
Swimming, exercise and activities to enjoy together
The Aquatic Centre has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a shallow wading pool. During supervised opening hours, a volleyball court at the Aquatic Centre is also available to everyone. If you’d like to include water activities and exercise in your stay, you’ll find several options here to choose from according to your interests.
The Tieri Gym & Fitness Centre is equipped with a squash court, cardio rooms and a full range of strength-training equipment; free towels are also provided. Members have access around the clock. Childcare facilities are also available on site for members. You can take these amenities into account when planning if fitness or squash is part of your personal travel itinerary. Peak Downs Karate has been teaching Shotokan karate in Tieri and Capella since 2010.
Golf and wildlife watching
The Tieri Golf Club offers extensive practice facilities for members of the community, users from the surrounding areas and visitors. The club is accessible around the clock. Every Friday, the Golf Club hosts the social “Chook Run” afternoon. If you’re interested in golf, you can consider this regular Friday event as well as the practice facilities.
Wildlife is also part of the town’s character: colourful lorikeets are native to Tieri and easy to spot. Whiptail wallabies and kangaroos are common. This gives Tieri a different focus for a trip than its sporting activities or local history. If you enjoy looking out for wildlife, these native animals can be an added reason to explore Tieri.
Tieri as a base for your stay
Tieri is approximately one hour from the regional centre of Emerald and about four hours west of Rockhampton. Both travel times help you place the town on your itinerary; keep in mind that these are approximate. If Tieri’s local history, sporting activities or wildlife are to be the focus of your stay, you can search for holiday accommodation in Tieri. Which of these aspects of the town influences your choice depends on the experiences you’d like to include in your trip.
