In North Burnett Regional, waterways and reservoirs offer opportunities for a range of water sports. Nearby, walks, rock art and historic sites add to the range of things to do. This lets you shape your trip around water activities, nature trails or local history.

Water and walks

The region offers opportunities for water skiing, boating and fishing. Around Monto, Lake Cania also offers fishing, kayaking and various water sports. If water activities are your priority, this gives you a different focus for your trip than a stay centred mainly on walks or local history.

Cania Gorge National Park offers marked walking trails, from short strolls to lookouts to full-day hikes. They lead to dry-stone rock overhangs, Aboriginal rock art and waterfalls. The Two Storey Cave Track leads to protected Gooreng Gooreng rock art. Across more than 3,000 hectares, the park protects the Brigalow Belt, freehand Aboriginal rock art and wildlife habitats. The range of walks makes a practical difference to your day’s plans: a stroll to a lookout and a full-day hike require very different amounts of time.

Railway and local history

Nearby, railway history also tells the story of regional connections and mining. Boolboonda Tunnel was built in 1883 for the railway line between Bundaberg and Mount Perry to serve the copper mines. In Eidsvold, the Eidsvold Historical Complex includes relocated slab huts, the Knockbreak homestead and railway relics. The local historical society cares for the complex.

The RM Williams Australian Bush Learning Centre in Eidsvold offers interactive displays and saddlery demonstrations. There is also a nightly sound and light show projected onto a homestead-style facade. In Mount Perry, the Heritage Walk takes you through the town’s history. Together, these places offer different ways to explore the past: a historic railway line, cared-for relics, exhibitions and a walk focused on local history.

Mundubbera: trails, exhibitions and a park

In Mundubbera, the approximately 700-metre Arthur Dagg Walk leads to the town centre. The walk is connected to a sensory garden and a bush tucker planting. The Mundubbera Heritage Centre displays a fully restored wagon, historic objects and several photographic displays about early settlement and industrial history.

Mundubbera Bicentennial Park offers riverside trails, a restored steam locomotive, sensory gardens and sculptures celebrating Mundubbera’s heritage. The town offers different ways to explore: the approximately 700-metre walk to the town centre, historic objects at the Heritage Centre and memorabilia in the park. The photos at the Centre focus on early settlement and industrial history, while the sculptures in the park celebrate Mundubbera’s heritage.

Art, lookouts and more to discover

Three Moon Silo Art features grain silos painted with local wildlife and the Dreaming story of Three Moon Creek. The Monto Public Art Trail runs through the art park areas on Lister Street and brings together sculptures, visitor information at Pioneer Cottage and colourful murals. The two art attractions offer different highlights: large-scale silo art and works along a trail.

Gayndah Museum & Information Centre displays memorabilia from the citrus industry, historic machinery and a miniature village made from relocated buildings. Archer’s Lookout offers views over Gayndah, the Burnett River and citrus groves. Gayndah Big Orange offers tastings, orchard tours and seasonal harvest baskets; seasonal availability may vary for the harvest baskets.
