Historic Places and Their Stories

In the heart of Lockyer Valley, the Gatton & District Historical Society presents 18 historic buildings across 2.5 hectares. They house three static exhibitions about the region’s history, with knowledgeable volunteers sharing their stories. The buildings themselves and the exhibitions offer two ways to explore regional history.

Nearby in Laidley, the Laidley Pioneer Village and Museum displays historic buildings, exhibitions, collection items and machinery that illustrate the lives of the early pioneers. The Village was Queensland’s first established pioneer village and opened in 1972. On open days and during special events, you can watch local blacksmiths and woodworkers at work; check current dates if you plan to see these demonstrations.

In Murphys Creek, the Jessies Cottage Local History Museum tells the stories of Jessie, the Taylor family and the town through artefacts. The Queensland Transport Museum in Gatton adds an exhibition of original First World War-era military vehicles to these local stories. Its Kids’ Activity Corner is designed for younger visitors: interactive history activities include writing thank-you letters to veterans’ organisations, themed colouring with the pictures displayed, a reading corner, and Lego and search activities. If these activities are important to your visit, check their current availability in advance.

Nearby, Neumann Haus was built in 1893 by German immigrant Hermann Neumann. A tour of 9Dorf Farms also offers a glimpse of life on a working farm. Visitors can feed calves in the rearing area, collect eggs in the paddock and fish.
