Home Hill offers families a range of ways to shape their trip: a swimming pool with a dedicated wading pool, insights into the history of the sugarcane region and an annual festival. There are also opportunities to enjoy nature. When planning your holiday accommodation, you can consider whether you would like your stay to focus on culture, activities to enjoy together or the landscape.

Enjoy swimming and the festival

The Home Hill Swimming Pool has a 50.3 m (55-yard) lap pool and a separate wading pool for children. It is supplied with artesian water, which maintains a constant water temperature of around 27 degrees. The two pools offer different ways to enjoy a visit: swim laps in the long pool or spend time in the wading pool with the children. The water temperature and pool length also offer practical details for anyone planning to visit a swimming pool during their trip.

The Home Hill Harvest Festival is another event around which to plan your stay. It takes place every year from October to early November and ends with a Grand Parade and a Street Party. The programme includes entertainment, rides, food and activities for the whole family. If you would like to experience the festival, you can use the period from October to early November as a guide for planning your trip; the parade and the street party that follows bring the programme to a close.

Discover the history of the Burdekin region

The Burdekin Gateway Visitor Information Centre is located in Home Hill in a heritage-listed Queensland Rail building. The centre’s collection includes numerous photographs and historic objects relating to the construction of the Silver Link Bridge from 1947 to 1957. Those interested in the history of construction can find a tangible way to explore this project here. The Burdekin Diorama, in turn, offers insights into the development of the Burdekin sugarcane industry: detailed maps, historic photographs and explanatory panels are complemented by a collection of historic machinery. This includes the Cannavan Cane Harvester and the Populin Automatic Planter.

Home Hill Powerhouse also tells the story of the area’s agricultural development. Completed in 1922 as part of the Inkerman Irrigation Area Scheme, it supplied electricity to farmers on the Inkerman Estate for irrigation purposes until 1953. Together with the Diorama’s machinery and maps, it offers different perspectives on the region’s history: irrigation technology, the sugarcane industry and agricultural tools. The Burdekin Diorama is located near Home Hill’s Inkerman Sugar Mill and offers a place to pause and explore this agricultural history.

For historic buildings, there is also a map for the Home Hill Heritage Town Walk. It helps visitors explore buildings in Home Hill and the Burdekin region. The Burdekin Art Trail offers a different perspective: it currently spans five locations and can be started in Giru to the north or Home Hill to the south. The walk through historic buildings and the art trail appeal to different interests; if you would like to include both, you can take their respective stops into account when planning your stay.

Landscape and accommodation

Nearby, Mt Inkerman is about 10 minutes south of Home Hill. From there, views stretch across sugarcane fields and the Burdekin River to Cape Upstart. The Mount Inkerman Nature Trail (MINT) runs through native bushland and takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete. These nature experiences add landscape and activity to the historic themes, without having to overlook the cultural attractions.

Home Hill Comfort Stop has toilets, hot showers, barbecue facilities, food preparation benches, sinks, picnic tables and an accessible bathroom. Visitors can stay there free of charge for a maximum of two nights within any 14-day period. This limit is relevant when planning your stay: the Comfort Stop is a short-term place to stay, while looking for holiday accommodation involves a different kind of base for your trip.
