On Hayman Island, you can explore nature on guided trails and on the water. Options range from birdwatching in the island’s interior and a hike to a peak to low-tide tours and kayak trips to reefs.

Birdlife and Trails in the Island’s Interior

The Nature Walk offered by the resort leads into the heart of the island to observe its birdlife. Birds to look out for include cockatoos, Rainbow Lorikeets, Stone-Curlews, Kingfishers and Kookaburras. For planning purposes, this walk offers a dedicated opportunity to focus on wildlife during an outing, rather than spending the day mainly hiking to a destination or taking part in an activity on the water.

The guided hikes also have different focuses. The Guided Island Loop Hike follows a route around the island and offers insights into native flora and fauna. The Sunset Peak Hike takes you to the summit of Hayman Island, where views extend across the Whitsunday Islands. You can then decide whether a loop that provides nature insights or a walk to a lookout better suits your interests. The “Blue Pearl Bay Hike & Snorkel” includes a 45-minute walk each way. It ends with a swim or snorkelling in a bay. Blue Pearl Bay is on the north-western side of Hayman Island.

At Low Tide and on the Water

On the Sand Flat Tour offered by the resort, visitors explore shallow water at low tide while marine experts show them marine life. The low tide exposes a 100-metre stretch of shoreline scattered with coral, sea urchins and seashells. The timing of the tide is therefore part of this tour. This makes it a different way to experience the coast from hiking to the summit or walking a loop around the island.

The “3 Hour Kayak & Snorkel Tour” takes you by kayak to Blue Pearl Bay, Langford Island and Bali Hai. You can snorkel around the reefs and encounter green sea turtles and stingrays. Hayman Island’s northern bays are also among the best snorkelling spots in the Whitsundays. If you want to plan your trip mainly around experiences on the water, these details offer specific points to consider when choosing suitable excursions.

Wildlife Spotting at Dusk

The Nocturnal Walk offered by the resort looks for native rock wallabies and owls at dusk. This walk also involves searching the water for wildlife. The tour has a different focus from daytime birdwatching: it turns your attention to animals to look for at dusk and in the water. The endangered Proserpine rock-wallaby was introduced to Hayman Island as part of a conservation program.

The Hayman Island and Arkhurst Island Complex is designated for motorised water sports. Along with the guided hikes, low-tide activities and snorkelling opportunities, this offers a range of nature and water-based experiences. When choosing your holiday rental, consider which of these interests matter most for your trip; the excursions differ in their focus and the activities mentioned for each.
