In Gympie, riverside scenery, outdoor experiences and stories from the gold mining era come together. The River to Rail Trail runs through the centre and is 7.8 km long. The Victory Heights Trail Network has 25 km of well-maintained singletrack trails winding through hilly terrain with remnant eucalyptus forest and seasonal creeks. There are also historic railway and museum experiences, as well as buildings that bring Gympie’s history to life.

When choosing a holiday rental in Gympie Regional, you can start by asking whether your trip will focus more on outdoor activities, regional history or a mix of both. The attractions described offer different highlights, without requiring you to choose just one way to explore.

Riverside paths and trails for active days

The River to Rail Trail is suitable for walking and cycling. Much of the route follows the Mary River, where visitors can picnic, fish, swim, canoe and kayak. Those particularly interested in the river landscape will also find remarkable wildlife there: animals found along the Mary River section include the Mary River turtle, Mary River cod, Australian lungfish and platypus. These specific species also make this section interesting for nature lovers.

The Victory Heights Trail Network offers a different kind of outdoor experience. It is suitable for wildlife watching, bushwalking, trail running and mountain biking. The 25 km of singletrack trails are set in hilly terrain with 60 hectares of remnant eucalyptus forest and seasonal creeks. So, alongside sporting activities, the focus is also on scenery and observing nature. The network also includes a 2 km children’s bike track and a shelter with picnic tables. If you are travelling with children, you can consider this dedicated track option when planning an active day.

The trail lengths give you a practical guide for planning your day: the trail through the centre of Gympie is 7.8 km long, while the Victory Heights Trail Network has 25 km of singletrack trails. These figures describe different offerings; choose based on whether you would prefer to walk and cycle or include other outdoor activities such as trail running and mountain biking.

Gold rush, forestry and local history

At the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum, documents, artefacts and photographs tell the story from James Nash’s discovery of gold in 1867 to the recent closure of operations at the Gympie Eldorado Goldmine. This spans an important historic event through to the more recent history of gold mining. The museum’s Gold Mine Cafe also serves meals and coffee overlooking the Duck Ponds.

Forestry also has its own place: the Woodworks Museum and Interpretive Centre features exhibits on regional forestry and offers live demonstrations. The museum was established in 1984 to preserve the history of the forestry and timber industries. Its static and working exhibits trace their development. Those interested in craftsmanship and regional industrial history will find a different way to explore the past here than at the gold museum.

The Gympie Heritage Trail visits historic sites around the city. Along the Gympie Heritage Trails, a sign at each location explains its history; some sites are the original buildings. In the city centre, you can also discover historic buildings, churches and landmarks connected with the gold rush heritage.

The Gympie Regional Gallery is housed in the heritage-listed 1905 School of Arts building. For more than 25 years, it has served the region as a social hub for art and culture. This adds a focus on art and cultural life to the historic themes.

Historic railway and other discoveries

The Mary Valley Rattler is a historic railway experience based at Historic Gympie Station. It departs from Wednesday to Sunday at 10 am. If a ride on the historic railway fits your travel plans, you can take this departure time into account when planning your day. The Gympie Steam Festival takes place at the museum every October.

To explore more of the area, you can also include Kybong and Curra in your exploration of Gympie Regional.
