Gympie Regional brings together the history of gold mining, art, historic railways and trails along the Mary River. Nature experiences and a regular farmers market also shape the experience of a visit. Depending on whether you prefer browsing exhibitions, exploring on foot or by bike, or discovering historic technology, your stay can have different focuses.

Gold History, Art and the Timber Industry

The Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum preserves documents, artefacts and photographs relating to James Nash’s discovery of gold in 1867 and the recently ceased operations of the Gympie Eldorado Goldmine. Educational tours and interactive exhibitions complement the collection. You can explore the history of gold mining through exhibits and guided activities.

The Gympie Regional Gallery is housed in the heritage-listed School of Arts Building, built in 1905. It presents professional and emerging artists from the region, as well as touring exhibitions from across Australia. Art classes, artist talks and tours are also on offer. Children and families can join Art Stars, a monthly art group held on the first Saturday of each month, except during school holidays.

The Woodworks Museum and Interpretive Centre offers a different perspective on regional history. Its exhibitions cover the development of the forestry and timber industries. Displays include a steam-powered sawmill, an exhibition on springboard techniques, historic forestry hand tools and a fully restored 1925 “Republic” log snigging winch. The museum offers demonstrations and tours by arrangement for groups, including school classes.

On Foot, by Bike and in Nature

The River to Rail Trail in central Gympie is a 7.8-kilometre route for walking and cycling. Much of the trail runs alongside the Mary River. There are opportunities for picnicking, fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking there. If you want to combine an active outdoor day with time by the water, you’ll find several different ways to enjoy the river along the trail.

The Victory Heights Trail Network offers another way to get active and observe nature. It covers 60 hectares of remnant eucalyptus forest, seasonal creeks and low hills. The trails are suitable for bushwalking, trail running and mountain biking. There is a 2-kilometre bike track for children; younger children must be supervised. This makes it possible to choose activities to suit the family’s interests without everyone having to go on the same kind of outing.

Historic Places and Special Outings

The Heritage Trails take you on walking tours to historic sites in Gympie. Memorial Park is a recognised landmark in the heart of the city and is listed on the Queensland State Heritage Register. As a memorial, it is also a valuable public open space. If you’re interested in history, you can include these places in your explorations alongside the museums and gallery.

Gympie’s historic railway station is believed to be the largest timber railway-station building constructed in Queensland during the 20th century. The Mary Valley Rattler runs historic steam train journeys between Gympie and various destinations in the Mary Valley. The trains use authentic steam locomotives and historic carriages. The station and train journeys offer a distinct way to explore railway history, different from visiting museums or going on walks.

The weekly market also gives you a specific date to plan around: the Gympie Showgrounds Farmers Markets are held on the second and fourth Sunday of each month, from 6 am to 12 pm, at 77 Exhibition Road, Southside 4570. They offer fresh produce and prepared takeaway food.
