Texas lies on the banks of the Dumaresq River and combines a distinctive riverside setting with unusual historical collections. Texas Rabbit Works, the Texas Cultural Centre and Regional Art Gallery, the Texas Heritage Centre & Tobacco Museum and the Texas Railway Museum each offer a different focus: industrial history, exhibitions, historic buildings and railway relics. This makes it possible to plan a stay around specific interests. When planning a holiday rental in Texas, the local attractions and riverside landscape offer different points of reference.

An unusual part of history

The restored Texas Rabbit Works is the only surviving processing works in Australia. The historic complex also includes the Riverside Freezing Works. Together, they give the town a specific historical focus: visitors can explore not just general chapters of the past, but a preserved works and another named part of the complex. For travellers interested in processing and industrial history, this is a distinctive reason to get to know Texas better.

Exhibitions and historic collections

The Texas Cultural Centre and Regional Art Gallery regularly hosts touring and local exhibitions. One photographic exhibition focuses on the 2011 floods. A specific event is therefore among the gallery's subjects, alongside its exhibitions. Those interested in art and documentary photography will find a range of approaches here.

The Texas Heritage Centre & Tobacco Museum includes numerous buildings for visitors to explore, as well as more than 2,000 catalogued objects, photographs and family histories. The buildings include a small shearing shed, a harness room, a lock-up with stocks, a blacksmith's shop, a general store with a post office, a farm hut and the Mission Hall. The range extends from individual workshop and farm buildings to spaces associated with trade, the post and other aspects of history. The collection complements the exploration of the buildings with objects, photographs and family histories.

The Texas Railway Museum has a different focus. A visitor description updated in December 2024 lists traditional restored trains and carriages, platforms, railway sleepers and restored tracks for visitors to explore. Unlike the Heritage Centre, the museum focuses on railway relics; the Heritage Centre, by contrast, features buildings and a collection of objects, photographs and family histories.

On the Dumaresq River

The river shapes more than just the location of Texas: the area around the Dumaresq River near Texas also offers opportunities for fishing. Alongside museums, exhibitions and historic sites, activities on the water provide another focus. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to centre your stay on culture and history or to focus more on the river area and fishing.

These different interests can also help guide your search for a holiday rental in Texas. Those who want to focus on historic buildings, exhibitions and collections will plan differently from those who are especially interested in fishing and the riverside landscape. The options describe different priorities for a stay without assuming a particular type of accommodation or amenities.

Heritage Centre visiting hours

Undated visitor information lists the following visiting arrangements for the Texas Heritage Centre & Tobacco Museum: visits are possible on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm; visits at other times are available by appointment. The centre is closed on public holidays and over the Easter weekend. Check visiting hours before you arrive.
