Goondiwindi Regional: Gardens, Water and Art
Accommodation in Goondiwindi Regional
Goondiwindi Regional combines botanical gardens and water sports with art and local history. The experiences offer different highlights, ranging from plant communities by a lake to trails and water activities, as well as a heritage-listed Art Deco building. If you’re looking for a holiday rental, you can choose based on which of these sides of the destination you’d like to shape your stay.
Botanical diversity on the western edge of town
The Goondiwindi Botanic Gardens cover 25 hectares on the western edge of Goondiwindi. Hundreds of native plant species from the Upper Darling Basin are arranged there in plant communities. A central lake with an island forms the spatial focal point of the gardens. This means the focus is not only on the diversity of the plants, but also on how they are grouped within the gardens. For travellers interested in landscapes and plant life, this offers a distinct nature experience in Goondiwindi.
Trails, water sports and swimming
East of Goondiwindi Town lies the 210-hectare Goondiwindi Natural Heritage and Water Park. A network of 6.6 kilometres of themed walking trails extends around the water park. A purpose-built water channel is designated for water skiing, wakeboarding, canoeing and boating. This offers different ways to spend an active day: walking the trails or enjoying water sports in the channel. If you’re planning a water activity, check in advance whether a separate closure notice applies to the waterways.
Another option for swimming is Goondiwindi’s public swimming pool. It is Olympic-sized and includes a shallow pool for toddlers. Shaded grassy areas with picnic tables round out the facilities. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit. The gardens, trails, water channel and swimming pool each offer their own highlights, allowing you to take different interests into account when planning your trip.
Art Deco and art in Goondiwindi
The heritage-listed Goondiwindi Regional Civic Centre was built in 1937 in the Art Deco style. It was intended to house the town council at the time, offices and a town hall. Its former function places it among the administrative and assembly buildings of its era. The Goondiwindi Pillars explore another historical theme: Chris Mackenzie designed and created the three large sandstone sculptures in 2001 as part of a project for the Centenary of Federation.
The “Goonawinna” mural is also part of the local art offering; it is located on McLean Street. Together, the Civic Centre, sculptures and mural provide different cultural points of interest—from the history of a public building to artworks with their own connections. They add a cultural dimension to the destination’s nature and water experiences.
Discover the Goondiwindi region
The Goondiwindi region also offers ideas for outings and exploration. Just outside Goondiwindi, Goondiwindi Cotton offers a guided tour of the working “Alcheringa” cotton farm. The Goondiwindi Cotton Tour in the region also explains how cotton is made into fabric and the history of its production in Australia. A regional art and sculpture tour takes in local creative works and landmarks.
In Yelarbon, the 96-metre-long silo artwork “When the Rain Comes” tells the story of the local community. At Coolmunda Olive Grove, visitors can stroll through the olive grove, enjoy views of Lake Coolmunda and sample organic olive products. These regional attractions are quite different from the sites and artworks in Goondiwindi itself; together, they offer further perspectives on the Goondiwindi region.
A seasonal event highlight is Hell of the West, also known as the Festival of Hell. This long-distance triathlon is held annually in summer in the Goondiwindi region. The programme includes a 2-kilometre swim, an 80-kilometre cycle and a 20-kilometre run. Check the current event dates when planning your trip.
