Chinchilla
Accommodation in Chinchilla
Discover Chinchilla through several distinctive themes: the history of the town and surrounding districts, Chinchilla Red and the Chinchilla Melon Festival. There is also Chinchilla Botanic Parkland, with its watermelon-shaped water play area and the history of the Aboriginal people. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your trip—from historic collection items and fossil wood to a festival held every two years.
Local History and Fossil Wood
The Chinchilla Historical Museum preserves a collection of objects relating to the history of Chinchilla and the surrounding districts in several historic buildings. The collection therefore extends beyond the town’s history to include the surrounding area. For travellers who want to get to know a place through its history, the museum offers a specific point of entry: its collection looks at both Chinchilla and the districts around it.
One distinctive feature is the “Beneath Chinchilla Soil” exhibition. It includes Chinchilla Red Gum and petrified wood found specifically in this area. Chinchilla’s petrified wood dates from the Jurassic period. The exhibition thus brings together a locally named subject and the geological classification of the petrified wood. Those interested in natural history can explore this aspect of Chinchilla alongside its local history.
Chinchilla Red, the region’s petrified wood, is also the subject of a dedicated search opportunity: visitors can obtain a permit to search for it themselves on local land. A DNRM licence and fees are required to search for petrified wood at two local sites. Both are available from the Chinchilla Visitor Information Centre. The museum exhibition and searching in the field are therefore two different ways to explore the fossil wood. If you are considering a search of your own, the licence and fees are practical requirements to keep in mind.
Festival and Botanic Parkland
The Chinchilla Melon Festival is held every two years. The festival includes Melon Skiing—a distinctive part of the event programme that gives the festival its own character. If you are planning a trip around the festival, you can take its biennial schedule into account when choosing your dates. The festival is therefore a different reason to visit from a stay focused mainly on the museum, local history or fossil wood.
Chinchilla Botanic Parkland offers two more points of interest for your trip: the parkland includes the history of the Aboriginal people and has a watermelon-shaped water play area. Its unusual shape makes the play area a memorable feature. Together with its historical theme, it adds another facet of Chinchilla, distinct from the museum collection, fossil wood and festival. When exploring the town, you can take in both cultural history and the unusual water play area.
When looking for holiday accommodation in Chinchilla, it helps to first decide what brings you there: would you like to explore the history of the town and its districts, learn about Chinchilla Red, or plan your trip around the biennial festival? Botanic Parkland offers another distinct focus.
