Hamilton Island: Beaches, Reef and Island Trails
Accommodation in Hamilton Island
Hamilton Island combines beach experiences and trails through the island’s natural landscape with excursions to the Great Barrier Reef. At Catseye Beach, you can swim and enjoy water sports; at low tide, you can snorkel on the fringing reef just off the beach. If you’d rather explore the Whitsundays from the water or the air, Hamilton Island offers more excursion options. You can choose a holiday rental on the island to suit the kind of trip you want: one with beaches and snorkelling, hikes or tours out to the reef.
Water, beaches and reef excursions
Catseye Beach is one of Hamilton Island’s main beaches. Hamilton Island Beach Sports rents out catamarans, paddleboards, kayaks and snorkelling equipment there. The fringing reef just off the beach offers another snorkelling opportunity at low tide. Snorkelling, diving, sailing and helicopter excursions to the Great Barrier Reef are available from Hamilton Island.
The Fly-and-Cruise excursion to Reefworld on Hardy Reef is a special combination: it pairs a helicopter flight and a catamaran trip with snorkelling or diving. Scenic flights to the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach also depart from Hamilton Island Airport. Day trips to Whitehaven Beach and sunset sailing tours are also offered from the island. These options are quite different from snorkelling at Catseye Beach: they take you beyond Hamilton Island on excursions or into the air.
Walking trails and viewpoints
There are several trails on Hamilton Island for exploring on foot, each offering a different experience. The free Hamilton Island Icons Trail follows the island’s walking trails. Stops along the way include a 3 m-high chair, a large swing, a hammock and a panoramic viewing platform. If you’d like to cover a longer distance, the Escape Beach Trail is a moderately difficult Grade 3 trail: it is 3.3 km each way and runs from the Scenic Trail Entrance via Saddle Junction to Escape Beach.
The Middle Head Trail passes through landscape rich in native Australian flora and ends on a hilltop. From there, you can see the Whitsunday Islands and the waters to the south. Passage Peak is the highest point on Hamilton Island and offers views of the Whitsundays. The island’s bushwalking and hiking trails are open from sunrise to sunset. If you’d rather find a secluded beach setting, Coral Cove has a beach with views towards Lindeman Island; there is also a large swing there.
Wildlife, island experiences and breaks
At Hamilton Island Wildlife, you can see koalas, pythons and lizards up close. This adds encounters with distinctive Australian animals to the nature experiences at the beach and on the walking trails. More than 60 activities are offered on Hamilton Island in total. If your group has different interests, you can choose between water activities, walking trails, wildlife encounters and excursions when planning your trip.
For a break with a view, wine and cheese are offered at the One Tree Hill lookout in the afternoon, along with drinks at sunset. This is a different kind of island experience from an active day on the water or a hike to a viewpoint: here, the focus is on the view with a drink.
Getting to and around Hamilton Island
Virgin Australia and Qantas offer direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to Hamilton Island. The airport is also an important air transport hub for the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. Resort accommodation, shops and restaurants are a five-minute trip from the airport. For air travellers, the Hamilton Island transfer service, Resort Link Transfers, operates between the airport and the marina; passenger ferries also depart from Hamilton Island Marina.
A free Island Shuttle runs daily on the island from 6:50 am to 11:00 pm. For getting around, the Hamilton Island app provides real-time listings of activities and entertainment, as well as information about events, restaurants, bookings and transport on Hamilton Island.
Hamilton Island is in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. When looking for a holiday rental on Hamilton Island, you can first consider which aspects of the island you want to shape your stay: beaches and water sports, trails and viewpoints, wildlife encounters or reef excursions. The experiences described here give you a concrete basis for assessing Hamilton Island as a destination for your trip.
