Bundaberg Regional combines green garden spaces and cultural discoveries with experiences centered on sea turtles and islands. The region’s food and drink culture is also part of the picture: tastings and farm tours offer a glimpse into Bundaberg beverages and macadamias. Whether your family would rather spend time outdoors, visit exhibitions or plan an island trip, different experiences can take centre stage on your holiday.

Gardens, birds and outdoor activities

The parks of Bundaberg Region offer opportunities for cycling, boating, bushwalking and birdwatching. At the Botanic Gardens, extensive green spaces meet remarkable diversity: they cover more than 27 hectares and include more than 10,000 different trees and shrubs. Their lakes create a diverse habitat that attracts up to 114 bird species. You can tailor a visit to your interests—for example, by making time for plants and nature or taking a walk through the gardens.

For families, the Nature Playground is a destination in its own right: its 17 play structures include swings, a carousel, two large play castles and a smaller castle for toddlers. If you’d like to explore the gardens in a different way, you can ride the Australian Sugar Cane Railway along a 2 km route through the Botanic Gardens. The playground and train ride offer two different experiences to add to your day, so you don’t have to choose just one way to explore.

Stories, art and regional culture

Four self-guided Heritage Trails explore Bundaberg’s places and stories. One is a self-guided walk through the Central Business District, featuring significant places, stories and historic buildings. The Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery offers a different focus: its three exhibition spaces host a range of local and travelling exhibitions from Queensland and across Australia.

At the Hinkler Hall of Aviation, you can learn more about Bert Hinkler. Interactive exhibitions and glider simulators bring his story to life; you can also see the original aircraft from his record-breaking 1921 flight. If you’re interested in the history and culture of the Taribelang People, you can also include Taribelang Bunda Cultural Tours in your trip. The tours include a tasting of local bush tucker foods.

Sea turtles and seasonal experiences

The Mon Repos Turtle Centre shares information about sea turtles and the conservation and research programs dedicated to their protection. From November to March, park rangers guide visitors through experiences with endangered sea turtles. Visitors can watch turtles laying eggs from November to January, and hatchlings emerging from January to March. Bookings and fees are required for these experiences. The different time periods can help you plan your visit around the natural experience that interests you.

Tastings and insights into regional produce

In Bundaberg, you can also learn about how regional products are made and the variety on offer. The Bundaberg Barrel features an interactive gallery that brings the brewing process to life, as well as guided tastings of the full range of Bundaberg beverages. Macadamias Australia is a farmgate experience on a multi-generational macadamia farm in Bundaberg. It offers free tastings of its signature macadamia product range and guided tours through the macadamia orchards. The Bundaberg Rum Visitor Experience offers the Bundaberg Rum Distillery Experience.
