Sunshine Coast Regional: Coast, Trails and Hinterland
Accommodation in Sunshine Coast Regional
Sunshine Coast Regional combines more than 100 km of coastline with long trails, water activities, gardens and culture. When choosing your holiday rental, first consider what kind of holiday you want: time by the sea and a walk along the coastal path, or a multi-day hike in the hinterland. Museums, markets and experiences on the water also offer their own highlights. Wurtulla is a locality within Sunshine Coast Regional; find an overview at Wurtulla.
Coastal pathway and water activities
The Sunshine Coast Coastal Pathway is 73 km long and runs from Bells Creek in the south to Coolum in the north. Along the way, it passes beaches, parks and recreational facilities. You can walk, jog or cycle along it.
Possible leisure activities on the Sunshine Coast include swimming, surfing, whale watching and diving.
Hinterland: walks and gardens
The Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk covers 58.8 km through the Blackall Range and takes at least four days. It passes through three national parks and has three bush campsites. Its length and minimum duration make it a multi-day part of a trip, not a short detour. If you plan to do this walk, you should allow enough time for it during your stay. Unlike the coastal pathway, the focus here is a multi-day route through the Blackall Range.
The Maleny Botanic Gardens offer a different kind of nature experience. The gardens cover almost 18 acres. Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World has four walk-through aviaries with more than 600 native and exotic birds. The size of the gardens and variety of birds make this attraction a distinctive choice. If you are especially interested in birdlife, the aviaries offer a hands-on experience within the gardens.
Culture, aviation and local cuisine
The Landsborough Museum is housed in the heritage-listed Landsborough Shire Council Chambers, built in 1924. The Queensland Air Museum presents Australia’s largest and most diverse historical aviation display. The two sites offer different cultural points of interest: one is a museum in a historic council building, the other an exhibition about aviation history. When choosing your outings, you can decide which of these themes interests you more: historic buildings or aviation history.
Saltwater Eco Tours travels the waterways of Mooloolaba and combines its tours with First Nations culture and maritime history. A Bushtucker Cruise offers a menu featuring native ingredients, local seasonal produce and bush tucker ingredients. The Eumundi Markets are open across all areas on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Their regular days can help you work a market visit into your travel plans.
Getting there and finding your way
Sunshine Coast is about an hour’s drive from Brisbane. For air travel, Sunshine Coast Airport is another useful point of reference: it is accessible to wheelchair users, and trained staff can assist with luggage, wheelchair transfers and boarding the aircraft.
The coastal pathway, multi-day hinterland walk, gardens and cultural offerings show different sides of Sunshine Coast Regional. They provide concrete ways to sort through your travel interests without combining the various outings into a single itinerary.
