Wiangaree, western gateway to Border Ranges National Park
Accommodation in Wiangaree
Wiangaree is the western gateway to Border Ranges National Park, which is part of a World Heritage-listed area. In addition to serving as a gateway to the park, the town has other places to visit: the Wiangaree General Store, with refreshments, prepared meals and relics of local history, and a lake at the southern end of town where you can watch birds. If you’re looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide whether your trip will focus mainly on the signposted park route, nature watching or local attractions. These priorities give you a practical starting point for choosing where to stay, without treating the different outings as if they were the same.
Riverside and birdwatching
Wiangaree is on the banks of the Richmond River. At the southern end of town, a lake offers an opportunity to watch birds, and parking is available at the lake. The riverbank and lake offer different points of interest: the riverbank describes the town’s location, while the birdlife offers a specific reason to stop and observe. If you’re planning your trip around your interest in nature, you can consider these two places as different experiences.
Discover the Wiangaree General Store
The Wiangaree General Store combines practical amenities with a local history theme. It offers refreshments and prepared meals, and displays relics of local history. The park area in front of the store has picnic and toilet facilities. This means you can plan a visit to the store and a break in the park area as two related but distinct options. Facilities may change; check them on site. The store’s offerings may also vary, and access to the history display is not always the same. Find out about the offerings and access before your visit.
To the national park and along Lions Road
From Kyogle, drive 15 km north along Summerland Way to Wiangaree, then turn onto Lynchs Creek Road. From there, Border Ranges National Park is signposted. Check the signs and road conditions before setting out.
Lions Road offers a different kind of outing. Its access road is 6 km north of Wiangaree; the road passes through the World Heritage-listed rainforest of the Border Ranges and offers a scenic drive. You can also reach the historically significant Border Loop Railway Lookout via Lions Road. This gives you a choice of different priorities: the signposted route to the park via Lynchs Creek Road, or the rainforest drive with the lookout as your destination. As with Lions Road, bear in mind that road conditions can change.
When looking for a holiday rental in Wiangaree, these interests can serve as a first guide. Would you like to focus on the signposted park route and the drive through the Border Ranges, or are you more interested in birdwatching and the local attractions? Answering this question first will help you choose a location based on the experiences you actually want to shape your trip.
