Wollomombi
Accommodation in Wollomombi
Wollomombi is characterised by waterfalls and deep gorges. Wollomombi Falls plunges 220 metres into Wollomombi Gorge in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park and is considered Australia's second-highest waterfall. Several lookouts offer different views of this landscape: waterfalls above the gorge, the gorges of the Chandler River and the river itself. When planning your time here, you might consider whether you mainly want to visit lookouts or choose a walking track with a river crossing and a waterfall as its destination.
Waterfalls and gorges from different viewpoints
The Wollomombi Main Falls lookout offers views of waterfalls plunging into the gorge below. A 200-metre path leads from the Wollomombi Falls picnic area to this lookout. How far you can see from there also depends on the weather. The Main Falls lookout is therefore a distinct way to appreciate the height and course of the falls into the gorge.
At Checks lookout, the view takes in waterfalls and gorges along the Chandler River. Edgars lookout is also near Wollomombi campground: its cantilevered viewing platform offers a view of the gorges. These lookouts offer different perspectives, so the waterfall is not the only attraction.
Two walking tracks, different highlights
The Chandler walking track starts at the Wollomombi Falls picnic area. This track offers opportunities for birdwatching, with scenic views from Checks lookout. The Wollomombi walking track has a different focus: it crosses the Wollomombi River, follows the edge of Wollomombi Gorge and leads to Chandlers waterfall. Chandler Falls lookout is at the end of this track. From there, you can see the Chandler River plunging through the gorge below.
The tracks differ in their stated destinations and views: birdwatching and the view from Checks lookout are among the highlights of the Chandler walking track; on the Wollomombi walking track, the river crossing and waterfall at the end of the trail are notable landmarks. There are also opportunities to spot wildlife and birds along this track. Sightings are not guaranteed, as vegetation and wildlife sightings vary.
Starting point and planning your stay
The Wollomombi Falls picnic area is in the Wollomombi Falls precinct of the national park. The area is flat and step-free; paved paths lead from the car park to the facilities and a nearby lookout. Along with the 200-metre path to the Wollomombi Main Falls lookout, the picnic area provides a clear starting point for a visit focused on lookouts.
If you're looking for a holiday rental, first decide whether your outings will focus more on lookouts or on the walking tracks described here. This gives you a concrete point of reference for matching the location of available accommodation to your daily plans. Check current conditions before your visit: erosion or safety works may affect access to the Chandler walking track; weather and park closures may affect access to the Wollomombi Main Falls lookout. Water levels and track conditions vary on the Wollomombi walking track.
