Kalkite lies on the northern shore of Lake Jindabyne. In the centre of the town, the Taylors Creek Arm forms a bay; the lake is Kalkite’s central point of reference. If you are planning a stay by the water, you will find a place whose location and local plans are closely connected with Lake Jindabyne. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first consider whether this lakeside setting suits your trip.

Lakeside location and boat ramp

The bay in the centre and the northern lakeshore give Kalkite a clear geographical setting. The village also has an existing boat ramp on the shore of Lake Jindabyne. It is distinct from the trails planned for the future: the ramp is already there, while the Lake Jindabyne Shared Trail Project describes plans.

Sporting events on the lake

Events have also used Kalkite as a starting point on Lake Jindabyne. The Sri Chinmoy Multi-Sport Classic started in Kalkite by the lake in 2024. On 3 March 2024, the event was held for the 16th time.

At the 2025 Australian Fly-Fishing Championships, Sector I at Kalkite was selected as the area for boat-based loch-style fishing. Kalkite’s boat ramp served as the meeting point for Sector I during the competition. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event or competition, you should check its specific dates separately.

Planned trails around the lake

The Lake Jindabyne Shared Trail Project aims to create a trail network of about 50 kilometres along the southern half of Lake Jindabyne. It is intended for mountain bikers, walkers and trail runners, and includes Kalkite as a location for a connection to the network. This length describes the planned network, not a single section at Kalkite.

A section of about 13.5 kilometres between East Jindabyne and Kalkite is also planned for the Lake Jindabyne Shared Trail. The shared-use trail is intended for walking, running and cycling, and is planned to be usable in both directions. The project envisages Kalkite as a starting point, as well as parking areas for access to the trail.

Guidance for choosing a location

Jindabyne is considered the nearest service centre. Jindabyne town centre is about a 20-minute drive from Kalkite. This approximate driving time offers a point of reference when weighing the lakeside location against the distance to the named service centre. Kalkite may therefore be particularly worth considering in your accommodation search if the northern lakeside location and connection to Lake Jindabyne matter to your travel plans.
