History and markets in Cobbitty

St Paul’s Anglican Church in Cobbitty was founded in 1827 by some of Australia’s earliest European settlers. Denbigh adds a heritage conservation dimension to this early local history: when Denbigh was added to the NSW State Heritage Register, a 500-acre conservation area was established in 2006 to protect the homestead, outbuildings, landscape and Aboriginal sacred sites in the valley. This conservation approach encompasses buildings as well as landscape and sacred sites.

The Cobbitty Village Markets feature 150 stalls offering arts and crafts, gourmet foods and regional produce. The markets offer a different focus from the historical themes, complementing them with crafts and regional products.

Experiences in the wider Camden Council destination

Camden is located in the Macarthur region and is recognised as the birthplace of Australia’s wool, wheat and wine industries. Camden Town Farm was originally a 52-hectare dairy farm bequeathed to the local community. Today, it is a working livestock farm as well as a recreational area for passive leisure activities. The Camden Fresh Produce Markets are held at Camden Town Farm every Saturday from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm. If you plan to visit the market, it is best to confirm the date before your visit.

Two walking trails offer different points of interest for outdoor activities. The Nepean River Trail is a 4.2-kilometre walking trail alongside scenic waterways and public art. It connects the Nepean River with Camden’s main street and includes Camden’s first public art trail. Completed in 2025, the John Oxley Reserve Recreational Trail offers a nature-focused walking experience with public art, viewing platforms and educational elements. The Nepean River Trail highlights its length and connection between the river and main street; the John Oxley Reserve Recreational Trail focuses on nature, views, art and education.

Camden’s Macarthur Park is home to a historic rose garden and the Camden War Memorial. The Heritage Walking Tour is a self-guided exploration of Camden’s historic buildings and history. The Camden Museum offers group tours as well as a guided tour of Camden’s town centre and region. This gives you the choice between a self-guided exploration and a guided option.

The Agricultural, Horticultural and Industry (A.H. & I.) Society Hall is still in use more than 100 years after it was built. Another self-guided option is the Camden Scenic Drive, a relaxed tour of rural and historic places.

Getting to Camden: the town is connected via the M5 and M7 motorways. Public transport includes train services to Campbelltown and bus services to Camden town centre.
