Sublette combines the wide-open expanse of the Wind River Range with impressive lake landscapes, historic sites, and a variety of trails. Most of the Bridger Wilderness lies in Sublette County; the protected area covers approximately 428,000 acres. Those looking for a vacation rental or vacation home in Sublette can therefore tailor their stay to the type of travel experience they want: hiking in the wilderness, enjoying activities on the lakes, driving along the Centennial Scenic Byway, or gaining insights into the history of the American West.

Landscapes for Active and Nature-Focused Days

The Wind River Range encompasses more than 1,300 lakes and has hundreds of miles of streams and hiking trails. This landscape is particularly vivid in the Scab Creek Wilderness Study Area in the lower elevations of the mountains. There, granite outcrops, forests, meadows, small lakes, and streams alternate. Two trails lead through the area from the Scab Creek Recreation Area and connect with the trail system of the adjacent Bridger Wilderness. Parking is available at the trailheads for the trails to Scab Lake and Scab Creek.

The lakes also offer a variety of options for planning your days. The Boulder Lake Recreation Area encompasses approximately 3 miles of shoreline; a developed boat launch is located on the south shore. At Lower Green River Lake, the Green River Lakes Campground sits at an elevation of 8,000 feet on the western edge of the Wind River Range. Green River Lakes is open to small watercraft and has a basic hand-carry launch for canoeing and kayaking. Trails in this area include the Continental Divide Trail, the Highline Trail, and the Lakeside Trail.

Winter Trails and Mountain Sports

Sublette County also offers a range of options during the colder months. More than 20 miles of groomed winter trails are open for hiking, snowshoeing, and fat biking. In addition, the area has terrain and trail systems for backcountry snowmobiling. In the Bridger-Teton National Forest, White Pine Resort offers 27 downhill runs across 363 skiable acres. In addition to the downhill area, it has 35 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski loops for all ability levels. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether your trip should focus primarily on hiking, winter sports, or a combination of nature and cultural experiences.

History and Culture on Site

The Green River Valley Museum presents local history and culture in seven buildings. The Museum of the Mountain Man focuses on the mountain man era, the culture of the Indigenous peoples of the Plains, the Oregon Trail, and the development of the region. The holdings of its supporting organization include more than 21,500 artifacts dating from prehistoric times through the settlement era. A special tradition is the annual Green River Rendezvous, a four-day celebration of the Rocky Mountain fur-trade era.

At Trappers Point Overlook, a 10-acre site marks another historic point of interest. A 0.25-mile footpath leads there from the interpretive sign. Fort Bonneville was built in 1832 near the confluence of Horse Creek and the Green River in what is now Sublette County and was the first trading post in present-day Wyoming. A monument erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1915 marks the site, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Traveling the Roads and Attending Regional Events

The 163-mile Centennial Scenic Byway runs through Sublette County. Its southern end begins in Pinedale along U.S. 191. The route follows a modern, paved, two-lane road; side roads from there provide access to attractions in the surrounding area. This also makes it possible to plan a stay as a scenic drive with individual cultural or natural destinations.

The Rendezvous Rodeo on the second full weekend in July and the Chuckwagon Days Rodeo around July 4 provide additional seasonal highlights. The Sublette County Visitors Centers answer questions about visiting and assist with accommodation planning. For further regional orientation, you can also visit the page about Boulder. This makes it possible to decide whether accommodation focused on trails and wilderness, lakes and watercraft, or history and events is the best fit for your trip.
