Niobrara County combines the history of the American West with museums, historic sites, and vibrant community traditions. The annual event Legend of Rawhide tells the story of the county’s history, narratives, and Western heritage. As a community performance, it is supported by volunteers from Niobrara County and the surrounding areas. It is based on an original script by EvaLou „Bonnie“ Paris from 1946. Those planning a trip filled with cultural impressions and family-friendly activities will find a wide range of points of interest here.

History in Museums and at Historic Sites

An important point of interest is the Stagecoach Museum in Lusk, at 322 South Main, located in the former Wyoming National Guard Armory building. For the 2026 season, the museum is open and accessible by appointment. The exhibition includes an authentic stagecoach from the Cheyenne-Black Hills Stage and Express Line, a reconstructed settler kitchen, and historic household, transportation, and medical items. An area dedicated to Indigenous history displays tools, arrowheads, and other objects related to the culture of the people who lived in the area before colonization. Fossils of early plants, primitive animals, early mammals, and dinosaurs are also on display.

The Lance Creek Museum provides more insight into the region’s working and economic history. Through photographs, it documents extensive oil production during four oil booms that began around 1919 and continued into the 1980s. Visits are possible by telephone appointment. In Lusk, Caboose Park also commemorates railroad history and houses an old railroad car. The county’s Carnegie Library is one of the few remaining Carnegie libraries and houses extensive historical information.

Historical themes can also be encountered outside the museums. On February 19, 1887, George Lathrop drove the last stagecoach drawn by six horses along the Cheyenne–Deadwood route. The George Lathrop Memorial Monument is located two miles west of Lusk on State Highway 20. The Texas-Montana Trail Monument is located five miles east of Lusk on Highway 18/20 and depicts the early era of trail traffic in a relief. The Lusk Water Tower qualifies for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A because of its connection to the Chicago and North Western Rail Line; the railroad contributed to the settlement of Wyoming and the development of transportation corridors.

Landscape, Quilt Blocks, and Activities

The Spanish Diggings are a distinctive historic landscape. The prehistoric extraction landscape covers approximately 400 square miles in parts of Niobrara, Goshen, and Platte counties. In prehistoric times, orthoquartzite was mined there as a source of stone tools. For travelers who appreciate regional design and community projects, the Wyoming Quilt Trail offers a different perspective: It began in 2016 as a project by Niobrara County residents to beautify Lusk and the surrounding area and is associated with more than 100 painted quilt blocks in Lusk. The known locations of the blocks are documented.

There are also specific options for active days. The Lusk Municipal Golf Course is a public 9-hole course west of town on Highway 273. It is located in Wyoming’s eastern plains, and the Niobrara River flows through the course. Several golf tournaments are associated with the course. Northside Park in Lusk offers a walking path, playground equipment, picnic tables, basketball courts, a skate park, horseshoe pits, and softball fields. Lusk’s Tiger Plunge features two water slides, including a tiger slide, step-free access, a fountain attraction, and a deep pool with a diving board.

Choosing the Right Accommodation as a Base

When looking for a vacation rental or vacation home in Niobrara County, it is worth deciding on your preferred experiences first. Culture enthusiasts can focus on museums, monuments, the Carnegie Library, and the history of the stagecoach. Those traveling with children can consider Northside Park and Tiger Plunge, while the golf course and Quilt Trail appeal to other daily interests. For travelers using Lusk Municipal Airport, self-service Grade-100LL aviation fuel and a vehicle available for free use during their stay are provided there. Niobrara County is also located between major American West attractions, including Yellowstone National Park, Mount Rushmore, and Devils Tower.

For further guidance within the broader selection, you can also compare Lincoln, Hot Springs County, Campbell, Sublette, Platte County, Albany, and Big Horn. Lusk offers the direct entry point to the town.
