Vilas County combines expansive wetlands, lakes, culture and a variety of outdoor experiences throughout the year. Those looking to plan a trip involving nature observation, exercise and regional history will find several clearly distinct points of interest here. When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worth first determining your preferred focus: landscapes and birds, water access, a museum visit or trails for active days.

Wetlands, Lakes and Special Nature Experiences

The Powell Marsh Wildlife Area covers approximately 4,303 acres. This area includes a large peatland with several unique wetland and plant communities. It is also an interesting destination for birdwatching: more than 213 different bird species have been observed there to date. At the north end there is a lookout point, and the area also has four designated parking areas. For planning your day, you can use the lookout point and parking areas as reference points for a nature outing.

Wabasso Lake offers further landscape features. The lake covers 49 acres, is deep and is described as a seepage lake. Its diverse and unusual aquatic vegetation adds a distinctive character to the lake landscape. The Rice Creek area lies between Round Lake and Big Lake and has boat access via Round Lake Road. Those wishing to include water-based experiences in their trip can consider these destinations when choosing the direction of their outings.

Trails for Active Days in Every Season

The WinMan Trails extend across more than 1,300 acres of private and public land in northwestern Vilas County. They are accessible year-round. In winter, they are suitable for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking; during the other seasons, for hiking and mountain biking. This allows you to adapt your trip planning to the season and your preferred form of exercise without having to limit yourself to just one type of outing.

For longer-distance tours, Vilas County has 700 miles of snowmobile trails and nearly 90 designated multi-use trails. Rustic Road 60 offers another perspective on the landscape. It is the only official Rustic Road in Vilas County and connects County Highway M south of Boulder Junction with County Highway K/N in Star Lake. If you enjoy traveling and combining different landscape impressions, this road connection can be a separate part of your plans.

Shorter or specifically selected nature stops are also possible. Van Vliet Hemlocks has a parking area and a trailhead on East Van Vliet Road. When searching for accommodation, you can therefore consider whether individual day trips or changing activities should be the focus of your journey.

Culture and History in Your Travel Itinerary

The George W. Brown, Jr. Ojibwe Museum & Cultural Center presents the history of Lac Du Flambeau. Its offerings listed there include one of the most comprehensive collections on local history, seasonal workshops, interactive exhibits, cultural programs and a world-record sturgeon. Tours are available for groups of five or more by advance notice. Anyone wishing to include this visit should take the required advance notice into account when organizing their trip.

The Vilas County Historical Museum was founded in 1959 and displays historical exhibits, photographs and memorabilia relating to the history of Vilas County and the surrounding areas. One of the special exhibits is the original snowmobile built in 1924. This creates room not only for nature and active days, but also for regional history and tangible memorabilia.
