Trempealeau County combines extensive cycling opportunities with river landscapes, prairies, wetlands, and unique glimpses of wildlife. When planning your trip, it is worthwhile to decide early what you want to focus on during your outings: Would you like to take long bike rides, use a canoe route, go birdwatching, or explore different natural areas? You can then make a better decision about which location for your vacation rental or vacation home is best suited as a base for your travel plans.

Cycling Between River and Landscape

A defining feature of the county is an interconnected cycling system with more than 487 miles of paved secondary roads through a scenic landscape. The Great River State Trail is part of the Mississippi River Trail, a designated bicycle route that runs from Lake Itasca in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana. In addition, an approximately 13-mile section of the Great River State Trail runs between the Village of Trempealeau and the access road to the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge. This information can help you weigh whether a cycling-focused stay or a varied nature program is the better choice when selecting your accommodation.

Shorter or differently oriented nature experiences are also possible. The self-guided Prairie’s Edge Tour Loop in the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge is 4.5 miles long and accessible to bicycles, pedestrians, and vehicles. The refuge covers 6,446 acres along the Mississippi River and lies within the Mississippi Flyway. During the spring migration, you can observe bald eagles, tundra swans, geese, and ducks from the observation platform.

Prairies, Wetlands, and Distinctive Bluffs

Perrot State Park lies between bluffs approximately 500 feet high at the confluence of the Trempealeau River and the Mississippi River. A marked canoe trail runs through Trempealeau Bay; canoes can be rented in the park during the season. The Long Lake Canoe Trail begins and ends at the Long Lake Boat Landing near Trempealeau. Those who want to incorporate water activities into their stay will find several different, clearly described options for planning their day.

The landscape also reveals itself through unusual habitats. Brady’s Bluff Prairie contains more than 100 species of native Wisconsin plants and provides habitat for rare animals, including the Wing Snaggletooth Land Snail, which is classified as endangered in Wisconsin. Tamarack Creek Bog is one of the largest tamarack bog areas in the Driftless Area outside the Glacial Lake Wisconsin region. In the Trempealeau Lakes State Wildlife Area, the lakes are separated from the Mississippi River by wetlands and surrounded by floodplain forests. Trempealeau Mountain is also one of only three massive rock islands along the entire Mississippi River.

The Great River Trail Prairies comprise two diverse remnants of sand prairie on a former railroad corridor. The area is one of the last remaining parts of Trempealeau Prairie and is home to rare plants. In Trempealeau County, you can reach the Great River Trail Prairies by parking on W. Prairie Road and continuing east or west along the recreational trail. Its straightforward orientation makes this destination especially interesting for an outing focused on the landscape itself.
