Sheboygan County combines the shores of Lake Michigan with wetlands, dunes, rivers, historic townscapes and an unusually diverse range of outdoor experiences. The tourist offerings range from water sports and nature observation to art and culture, golf, Road America, as well as health and wellness. For you, the question is therefore less about finding a single attraction than choosing the right vacation focus: coast, nature, active days, motorsports or regional discoveries.

Lake Michigan, Dunes and Special Natural Areas

Sheboygan has two miles of public sandy beaches along the shore of Lake Michigan. Surfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboarding are possible there. When wind speeds reach 15 to 25 miles per hour, kitesurfers are frequently seen at South Beach near King Park. For coastal views, the Sanderling Nature Center offers a rooftop terrace overlooking ships on Lake Michigan and waterfowl. The center’s exhibits, interactive information kiosks and hands-on activities also focus on the local wildlife.

Kohler-Andrae State Park encompasses miles of golden beaches along Lake Michigan and is open to everyone for exploration and recreation. At Kohler Dunes State Natural Area, you can see active and stabilized sand dunes, dune ponds and a dry-mesic white pine forest. Sheboygan Marsh Wildlife Area offers a different landscape: It encompasses the largest restored wetland in the watersheds of Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan and Lake Superior tributaries and serves as a resting, nesting and rearing area for numerous waterfowl and wetland birds.

Trails, Water and Active Excursions

For cycling and walking tours, Sheboygan County has more than 39 miles of paved, car-free multi-use trails that are part of the NOMO Network. The Rocky Knoll trail system at Rocky Knoll Health Care includes 7.5 miles of mountain biking and hiking trails. Those looking for a shorter, clearly defined activity can cycle, walk or run Road America’s “4 Miles of Fitness,” a four-mile course with 14 turns.

There are also several options on the water. Sheboygan County maintains six public access points on various inland waters. From Broughton Sheboygan Marsh, navigable, shallow waters extend for 25 miles to Lake Michigan. Tours on the Sheboygan River are possible; for coastal tours on Lake Michigan, you can rent stand-up paddleboards. When there is sufficient snow, the county also maintains 228 miles of public snowmobile trails. Maywood Environmental Park offers hiking, cross-country skiing, walking and birdwatching year-round and free of charge across 135 acres with six different ecosystems, an arboretum and a butterfly and hummingbird garden.

Road America, History and Regional Flavors

Road America at Elkhart Lake features a four-mile road course with 14 turns. Its offerings include public race weekends, karting and supermoto at the Briggs & Stratton Motorplex, as well as motorcycle and advanced driving schools. If motorsports is the focus of your trip, Elkhart Lake is therefore an important location to consider when searching for a suitable vacation rental or vacation home.

Cultural impressions range from the Downtown Sheboygan Falls Historic District, with more than 40 buildings restored to their 19th-century splendor, to Bookworm Gardens, a botanical garden in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, inspired by children’s literature. The exhibit at the former Bodenstab Cheese Factory presents examples of early cheese-making equipment and methods. In Elkhart Lake, the Farmers & Artisans Market at Village Square is a Saturday morning tradition with around 50 vendors. Offerings include vegetables, flowers, cheese, handicrafts and specialty products produced locally in Wisconsin.

Choose the Right Location

When searching for accommodation, you can first decide which experiences should shape your vacation. For beaches, water sports and coastal landscapes, Lake Michigan-related attractions take center stage. For nature observation and varied trails, wetlands, parks and the different trail systems are worth considering. Those who want to combine motorsports, a market visit and regional culture can include Elkhart Lake and the surrounding offerings in their plans.

For further regional options, you can also consider Sheboygan Falls, Glenbeulah, Sheboygan, Kohler, Elkhart Lake and Random Lake. Other regional starting points: Ashland County, Grant County.
