Stevens County combines expansive forest landscapes, winter activities, and impressive reminders of the region's history. For planning your trip, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on: Would you like to enjoy cross-country ski trails and snowshoe routes, drive along a scenic route, learn about historic sites, or combine wildlife viewing with outdoor activities?

Enjoy Winter and Summer Activities

The 49 Degrees North Nordic Center offers groomed trails for classic cross-country skiing and skate skiing, snowshoe routes, fatbike access, as well as rentals and lessons. Sand Canyon Sno-Park has 67 miles of snowmobile trails. This gives Stevens County a range of options for days in the snow, from quieter forms of exercise to motorized tours.

There are also various options at 49 North during the warmer months. The service roads in the West, Central, and East Basins can be used for mountain biking in summer. The Nordic trail system, service roads, and ski slopes are also available for hiking. The Little Pend Oreille forest block offers opportunities for camping, off-road vehicle driving, fishing, mountain biking, and winter activities.

Forests, Water, and Wildlife

The Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge defines the natural character of the region. This mountainous coniferous forest refuge ranges in elevation from 1,800 to 5,600 feet and includes several forest zones, lakes, wetlands, and more than 80 miles of streams. It provides habitat for bears, cougars, deer, elk, moose, and more than 200 bird species. Travelers who enjoy experiencing a variety of landscapes can combine this natural area with additional outings in the Colville National Forest, which is one of Stevens County's recreational resources.

The Kettle Falls area of the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area has a boat launch. The Kettle Falls Trail runs 0.75 miles to the Colville River and offers opportunities for birdwatching. St. Paul's Mission is part of the 0.25-mile Mission Point Trail; interpretive panels there explain the 9,000-year history of Kettle Falls.

History Along the Route

St. Paul's Mission is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and commemorates the Catholic presence in the Kettle Falls area, as well as the history of the Indigenous people whom the priests served. The Kettle Falls Historical Center is located along the historic Columbia River in Kettle Falls.

The Keller Heritage Center of the Stevens County Historical Society offers further insights. It is a seven-acre park with a group of historic buildings and a fire lookout tower. The Keller House and Carriage House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Colville's first public schoolhouse was built in 1874 and later moved to Keller Heritage Park. The Northeast Washington Fair promotes agricultural awareness and education through hands-on experiences, exhibits, and demonstrations.

Choose Accommodation to Match Your Travel Plans

When searching for a vacation apartment or vacation home in Stevens County, your planned daily routine is a useful starting point. In winter, cross-country ski trails, snowshoe routes, and snowmobile trails may be the focus; in summer, options include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Travelers with a stronger interest in history can make Kettle Falls and the historic sites the centerpiece of their trip. Accommodation should therefore suit the experiences you actually want to combine, rather than being selected solely by a general place name.

The Sherman Pass Scenic Byway is also a useful guide for a trip through the region. It crosses 5,575-foot Sherman Pass and passes through the Colville National Forest toward Kettle Falls and Lake Roosevelt. The byway follows State Route 20 between Republic and Kettle Falls. This makes it possible to plan Stevens County as a destination for a nature trip, a historical exploration, or a varied stay combining several types of excursions.
