Spencer Spit State Park is home to a rare sandspit surrounded by a saltwater lagoon. The park has a campground, group camps and opportunities for water-based recreation. At Agate Beach, tide pools become visible at low tide. Visitors can explore the intertidal zone there, and you can also launch kayaks from this beach. The Port Stanley Schoolhouse operated from 1917 until Lopez Island’s schools were consolidated in 1941. The local food culture is also part of discovering Lopez Island. The Lopez Island Farmers Market takes place seasonally on Saturdays from mid-May to mid-September near the Lopez Center for Community & the Arts. Products grown on the island and foods made there are sold, including jams, pickled products, fudge, seafood and grass-fed meat. Local artisans’ handicrafts are also available. At Watmough Bay Farm, a guided farm tour provides insights into growing vegetables and raising livestock on pasture.
