Mason County reveals its special character where water experiences, expansive nature trails and the history of Indigenous and regional communities come together. When planning your trip, you can choose between days on the water, quiet paths through wetlands and former cultural landscapes, or visits to museums. When searching for a vacation rental in Mason County, it helps to first determine the focus of your trip: Should the water be the main attraction, or would you like to combine nature and history?

Experience the water: from the shore to the island

At Potlatch State Park, mooring buoys are available year-round in front of a 5,700-foot shoreline. Swimming, boating, paddling, water skiing, crabbing and fishing with a permit are possible there. The park therefore offers various ways to spend a day on the water without having to commit to a single activity.

Hope Island Marine State Park can be reached exclusively by watercraft. On site, you can explore trails and observe seals in the water and eagles in the sky. This special accessibility is part of planning the excursion. At Jarrell Cove State Park, swimming and year-round overnight moorage for boats are possible. Covering 188 acres, Twanoh State Park is a marine campground on Hood Canal with warm saltwater for swimming and abundant shellfish. Shellfish gathering is also possible on Hood Canal.

Trails through wetlands, forest and former farmland

Those who enjoy exploring on foot will find a variety of trail experiences. The flat Shady Lane Trail near Staircase leads to Lake Cushman in less than a mile. At low tide, McMicken Island is connected to the mainland by an appearing sandbar. There is an approximately half-mile-long trail, a picnic meadow and a rocky intertidal zone to explore.

The Mary E. Theler Wetlands Nature Preserve lies on the edge of Hood Canal, where the Union River meets the fjord. A three-mile trail with bridges and boardwalks leads through the preserve and allows visitors to observe birds and mammals. The loop also includes a garden with native plants, a replica of a gray whale skeleton and outdoor artworks.

At Lake Isabella State Park, trails longer than four miles run through pastureland, orchards and forest. The 182-acre site preserves a former farm landscape where deer can be observed. This allows your stay to be tailored to your interests, with shorter explorations along the shore, longer trails or a landscape with an agricultural past.

Culture and history of Mason County

Bayshore Preserve was converted from a golf course into a natural area and is culturally significant as a former village of the Squaxin Island Tribe. At the 81.87-acre Oakland Bay Historical Park, trails lead to Malaney Creek and Oakland Bay. The park is also a historic property at the site of the Malaney house. The Mason Conservation District and the Capital Land Trust hold an annual workshop on native plants and nature walks there.

For a deeper insight into the region, the Mason County Historical Society Museum in Shelton preserves artifacts related to the timber industry, shellfish industry, agriculture and the early pioneer era, and maintains a public historical library. The Squaxin Island Museum Library and Research Center presents interpretive exhibits and artifacts relating to the relationship between members of the Squaxin Island Tribe and the seven inlets of southern Puget Sound. The Peninsular Railway and Lumbermen's Museum displays restored locomotives, cabooses and logging equipment from Shelton's railroad logging history. The Skokomish Tribal Center displays historical artifacts of the Twana and an extensive basket collection.

Options for different days of travel

Mason County Recreation Area also expands the possibilities with batting cages, ball fields, children's play areas, walking paths and restrooms. For the region's culinary offerings, there are gathered shellfish as well as oysters, mussels and geoduck. The variety therefore ranges from active hours on the water and nature observation to museums, historic properties and regional specialties.

If you would like to focus your accommodation search on other places, you can also include Kamilche, Shelton, Belfair and Hoodsport in your further planning.
