Castle Rock: River Trails, Flowers and Silver Lake
Accommodation in Castle Rock
Castle Rock brings together a range of travel interests: trails along the Cowlitz, historic and floral sights in the center, and nature experiences in the surrounding region. State Route 504 makes the city a gateway to the northern entrance of Mount St. Helens. When looking for a vacation rental, the mix of outdoor activity, city visits and nature watching you want can be a good place to start.
River Trails, Cycling and Wetlands
The Riverfront Trail is a paved, lighted, 1.7-mile multi-use trail. It runs north from Lion's Pride Park to the Castle Rock Sports Complex, with sections on both sides of the Cowlitz River. It’s worth checking local conditions before your visit. If you’d like to include cycling in your itinerary, there’s also the Bike Skills Park. Its skill-building and practice features are suited to everyone from beginners to experienced cyclists. The park is restricted to bicycles and trail bikes.
At the Mount St. Helens Visitor Center, you can explore Silver Lake on a 0.6-mile trail with boardwalks over the wetland. Compared with the 1.7-mile Riverfront Trail, this is the shorter of the two specified trail routes; the character of the trail is different, too. The Visitor Center focuses on the wetland and opportunities to observe it: depending on the season, you may see aquatic plants and migratory birds.
The Seaquest State Park is another part of the region’s natural offerings. It has more than 12 miles of trails, and conditions may change seasonally. A pedestrian tunnel connects the park with the Mount St. Helens Interpretive Center and Silver Lake. The lake is a shallow wetland body of water and a habitat for numerous bird and wildlife species. If you’d like to include nature trails and wildlife watching in your stay, you can weigh these interests alongside the trails in the center and along the river as you plan your trip.
Historic Downtown and Flowers
Take the self-guided Castle Rock Walk to discover the center on a historic and floral tour. It runs through Castle Rock, Washington; check the route details locally. The flower program also helps shape the cityscape: since 2011, the award-winning, volunteer-run program has decorated the streets with hanging flower baskets, planters in front of businesses and garden beds. Seasonal displays may vary.
Historic downtown has a wide selection of shops, antique stores, restaurants and accommodations. Individual offerings may change.
Events and Offerings Throughout the Year
The Castle Rock Fair takes place annually in July, and the Festival of Lights takes place annually in December. Event dates may vary, so check specific dates if one of the festivals is important to your trip. In 2026, weather permitting, the Castle Rock Sunday Market will take place on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., May through October, at Haircut Express in Castle Rock. Offerings include food, produce, handmade goods, plants and antiques.
Water and Regional Connections
At the Cowlitz River, the Al Helenberg Memorial Boat Launch provides access for motorized and non-motorized boats, as well as kayaks; parking is available. This makes it easy to combine Castle Rock with an interest in activities on the water. The route along State Route 504 also connects the area to the northern entrance of Mount St. Helens; road conditions may vary. Whether you’re most interested in the river, cycling routes, downtown, events or natural areas, these different interests can help you tailor your vacation rental search to the trip you’re planning.
