Rockbridge County is home to more than 58,000 acres of national forest. One particularly characteristic natural attraction is Natural Bridge of Virginia, a natural limestone arch that rises approximately 200 feet above Cedar Creek. Natural Bridge State Park is also an International Dark Sky Park. For travelers who value an exceptionally dark night sky, this aspect may play a role in trip planning.
The Goshen Pass Natural Area Preserve is a three-mile-long mountain gorge formed by the Maury River. Those planning longer walks can use the seven-mile Chessie Trail, which connects Lexington and Buena Vista. Lake Robertson adds a 75-acre recreational area with a 26-acre lake, boat rentals, camping opportunities and eight interconnected hiking trails.
Wildlife Encounters and Activities
Virginia Safari Park covers 180 acres and is home to more than 1,200 rare and endangered animals. Offerings include 45-minute guided wagon rides through the safari, with animal feeding from the wagon. In Safari Village, a wheelchair-accessible ramp leads to a covered giraffe platform where guests can feed giraffes by hand. The park also offers up-close encounters with southern white rhinoceroses under the guidance of an animal care specialist. During the Daily Keeper Chats, the animal care team provides information about anteaters, African penguins, reptiles, cheetahs and giraffes.
For trips with children, there are further independent experiences to enjoy: At the Budgie Adventure Aviary, visitors can feed budgerigars while the birds sit on their hands. Dinosaur Kingdom II is a self-guided attraction featuring a train ride, time tunnel, mining town and Extinction Junction. Lavender Fields at Tantivy Farm combines trails to a waterfall and a Fairy Trail with lavender-themed arts and crafts workshops and family activities.
Water, History and Regional Character
The Maury River offers fishing opportunities in Rockbridge County, from the trout-stocked rapids of Goshen Pass to the deep pools downstream from Buena Vista. Goshen Pass also offers opportunities for kayaking, swimming, sightseeing and exploring. The six-mile whitewater section through the pass includes two Class IV rapids and is typically navigable from March through June.
The county’s history can also be traced through specific places. At Walnut Grove Farm in northern Rockbridge County, Cyrus Hall McCormick developed the first effective reaper. Cyrus McCormick Farm includes a small museum, a gristmill, a nature trail and a picnic area. Wade’s Mill is Virginia’s oldest continuously operating commercial gristmill and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; its gift shop sells flours and baking mixes. Ecco Adesso Vineyards is a family-run winery on nearly 350 acres with vineyards and orchards. For an unusual evening, there is Hull’s Drive-In, a nonprofit, community-supported and community-operated drive-in theater built in 1950 that has been part of the Rockbridge region’s community for more than 70 years.
