The character of the Rockfish Valley Loop Trails is quite different: The trail network is level, four miles long and runs along the Rockfish River and Reid's Creek. The Kids in Parks Rockfish River Trailhead adds a level, one-mile family route with StoryWalk signage and riverside habitats. The Three Ridges Loop also offers a different emphasis: Along its 13.3 miles, the route includes waterfalls, rocky climbs and views of the Appalachian Mountains.

The Blue Ridge Tunnel combines history with a specific hiking route. The railroad tunnel opened to traffic on April 13, 1858, and was the longest railroad tunnel in North America at the time. Today, it is a restored tunnel from the 1850s, accessible via a 2.25-mile gravel-surface trail. The Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail is intended for daily access from sunrise to sunset.
For a scenic loop drive, the Nelson Scenic Loop is an option. The 50-mile driving and cycling tour follows Route 151, Route 664, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Route 56. It can be traveled in sections or completed as a full tour in a single day trip. In addition, the first 35 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway run through Nelson County. Those who prefer to be on the water will find opportunities on the James River, which forms the southeastern boundary of Nelson County, to launch canoes and kayaks, access for johnboats, and go fishing.
Regional Specialties and Culinary-Focused Excursions
The Nelson 151 section in northern Nelson County includes five wineries, three breweries and a cidery. The Blue Ridge Fruit Loop leads to 11 orchards and farms in Nelson and Amherst County. With the pass mentioned there, visitors can pick fruit themselves from May through December. In addition, the Nelson Farmer's Market Co-Op has supported local farmers, food processors and craft vendors for more than 25 years.
