Tuckahoe is designated as a National Historic Landmark. Its historic character also includes the unique H-shaped main house, which was uncommon among colonial plantation houses, and the early outbuildings that form a rare plantation street. The Dover Slave Quarter Complex is one of the few surviving groupings of slave quarters in Virginia. The complex also features a broad, sweeping layout.

At Court House Green, the Old Stone Jail presents exhibits about law enforcement and prison life from various periods spanning 1825 through the 1950s. A colonial-style path circles the site, while interpretive signs provide information about the Goochland courthouse. The Central High Cultural and Educational Complex adds to these historical impressions with exhibits, an interactive kiosk about the facility’s history and a multipurpose auditorium with 170 seats.

Powell’s Tavern is also part of the area’s history: It was once a tavern, stagecoach stop and post office. Before the Civil War, Goochland was home to around 50 gold mines. These varied topics make exploring the area’s history engaging, without all the sites belonging to the same period.

River, Trails and Nature Experiences

Tucker Park at Maidens Crossing extends along 1,200 feet of the James River and has a launch ramp for non-motorized boats. The park is also home to Hidden Rock Bark Dog Park, which is connected by a trail system to the Goochland County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center.
