History to See and Experience
An important point of interest is the Sargeant Museum of Louisa County History. Six permanent exhibitions present the county’s history through the stories of Indigenous groups, the American Revolution, the Civil War, education, transportation, and government. Behind the museum lies Heritage Farm, a living history site with open-hearth cooking workshops and free family days. It is also home to the Michie House and the Smoke House, which were relocated and restored in 2013, as well as the Trevilians Schoolhouse, which was relocated and restored in 2017.
The self-guided Town of Louisa Tour also focuses on the past. It leads to residences, office buildings, and churches from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Louisa Arts Center is housed in the historic Louisa school building. The Purcell Art Gallery presents changing exhibitions year-round featuring works by nationally recognized artists, respected art guilds, and local artists. Art and craft classes are also offered for all age groups. The Cooke-Haley Theater is a 205-seat venue for live theater, concerts, and lectures.
Trails, Farms, and Lakes
The Green Springs Historic District showcases Louisa County as a landscape with a long agricultural, architectural, and social history. The geological basin covers 14,000 acres and is characterized by lush, rolling pastures. At Bracketts Farm, a 1.6-mile Nature and Heritage Trail runs as a loop near Nolting Pond. Bracketts Farm is also included in the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ Wildlife and Birding Trail program. The wildlife listed as occurring there includes short-eared owls, rusty blackbirds, and larks.
Those who prefer longer trails will find more than eight miles of wooded paths for hiking and horseback riding at Trevilian Station Battlefield Park. The trails of the Trevilian Battlefield Station Trail are accessible on foot and horseback; bicycles and motorized vehicles are prohibited there. For another form of historical journey, the self-guided Trevilian Station Battlefield Tour is a driving tour with twelve stops and audio segments about the historical events.
Boat trips and tubing are promoted at Lake Anna, while the lake has more than 200 miles of shoreline in Louisa County. The Lake Anna State Park visitor center presents the history of gold mining in the surrounding area; guided tours of the Goodwin Gold Mine are also offered. The 75-acre Bowlers Mill Lake has a boat ramp, is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, and prohibits gasoline-powered motors.
Excursions and Regional Specialties
For a drive through the countryside, the Piedmont Explorer starts in Louisa and travels through rolling farmland and peaceful rural landscapes. The Louisa Flyer also begins in Louisa, Virginia, and travels westward along the tracks toward the outskirts of the town of Ivy. The Sip & Savor Express features a different local winery every weekend, along with paired wine tastings and charcuterie, accompanied by a wine expert on board.
