Box Elder County combines impressive landscapes with railroad history, regional culture and unusual destinations. Here, you can combine trails through wetlands and along lakes with historic sites, museums, festivals and distinctive landforms. When choosing a vacation rental, it is therefore particularly important to consider the focus of your trip and which transportation routes support your excursion planning.

Nature Between the Bear River, Lakes and Distinctive Rock Formations

The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge protects the wetlands at the mouth of the Bear River. Around the visitor center, you can walk 1.5 miles of trails. Mantua Reservoir offers a different perspective on the landscape: The Dike Trail runs for 4.2 miles around the lake as a wide, level gravel path. East of the reservoir is also the Eagle-Rise trail system on land owned by Brigham City.

Among the unusual natural destinations is Devil’s Playground, a geological landscape with balanced boulders and weathered granite formations. Spiral Jetty also creates its own distinctive impression. The road there ends at a turnaround with a parking area directly above the artwork. These varied landscape experiences help you choose between a trip featuring trails, lakeshores and rock formations.

Railroad History to See and Explore

At Golden Spike National Historical Park, the Transcontinental Railroad was completed on May 10, 1869. The East Auto Tour follows the original railroad site. The 1.5-mile Big Fill Loop Trail begins on the original Central Pacific railroad site and returns along the Union Pacific site. Along the way, it highlights the Central Pacific’s Big Fill and the abutments that once supported the Union Pacific’s Big Trestle.

Chinese Arch also combines nature and history: The natural limestone arch commemorates the thousands of Chinese laborers who helped build the Transcontinental Railroad. Those who also want to include the history of technology and space exploration in their itinerary will find a free outdoor museum at the Northrop Grumman Rocket Garden, featuring actual rockets and boosters from significant space missions.

Museums, Churches and Regional Traditions

The Brigham City Museum of Art & History houses a permanent exhibition on the history of Brigham City. At the Bear River Valley Museum in Tremonton, you can see exhibits on the history of the Bear River Valley as well as works by contemporary artists from the region. Another exhibit there is dedicated to the Candy Bomber. The First Ward Meeting House is the oldest surviving church in Brigham City; construction began in 1884 and was completed in 1886. The Wagon Land Adventure Foundation also has a collection of more than 350 documented horse-drawn vehicles.

Events also shape the region’s character. The Golden Spike Rodeo is Utah’s oldest continuously held rodeo and was first held in 1925. Peach Days is a community festival in Brigham City that takes place every September. Utah’s Famous Fruit Way runs through Box Elder County along U.S. Highway 89 and can be traveled each summer from June through October.

This allows you to add a focus on water and relaxation to your trip planning without leaving out the historic and scenic destinations.

Several roads are important for getting oriented in the region: I-15 runs north to south and provides access to Box Elder County. I-84 meets I-15 near Tremonton and then heads northwest into Idaho. U.S. Highway 89 offers a scenic connection through historic Brigham City to Logan and the Cache Valley. When looking for a vacation rental, you can incorporate these transportation routes into your trip planning along with your preferred destinations.
