Willacy County combines the distinctive waterscape of Laguna Madre with natural areas, maritime experiences and a remarkable history. Around Port Mansfield, the range of activities extends from fishing and kayaking to dolphin watching. In Raymondville and along the Texas Tropical Trail, on the other hand, you will encounter traces of history and regional culture. These differences can help you determine the focus of your trip and, consequently, the right location for a vacation rental or holiday home.

Water Activities Around Port Mansfield

The options around Port Mansfield include activities on and along the water. From the local harbor, fishing is possible from small boats, while wading, from the shore and at public fishing piers. The bay’s shallow, sheltered waters are also suitable for windsurfing and sailboarding, as well as kayaking and canoeing. If you are planning an active holiday with a variety of water sports, you can give particular consideration to these options when choosing where to stay.

Laguna Madre is one of only six hypersaline lagoon or bay systems in the world. Its shallow waters are rich in fish, shrimp and crabs. You can also watch dolphins on a boat trip near Port Mansfield. The Gulf of Mexico is a nine-mile boat ride from Port Mansfield. The Mansfield Channel leads there: The 12.9-mile access route is designed for low-draft vessels, connects the Gulf with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway at Port Mansfield and is used by recreational boats as well as commercial barge traffic.

Nature Between Lagoon, Grassland and Brushland

Willacy County also features a variety of landscapes on land. The Las Palomas WMA stretches across the Texas counties of Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy and comprises 18 wildlife management units. Nine units are open for public use: Anacua, Arroyo Colorado, Baird, Carricitos, Chapote, Ebony, Longoria, Taormina and Tucker. In Willacy County, Tamaulipan thornscrub, grassland, agricultural land and wetlands meet there.

The Longoria Unit has a low-barrier or accessible hiking trail, while the Anacua Unit offers designated walking paths. The Port Mansfield Nature Trail runs through coastal grasslands and tidal areas. Tours for wildlife observation are offered by local private ranches by appointment and are led by experienced field guides. Surrounded by dense, sparsely populated brushland, the area near Port Mansfield offers opportunities to observe deer, turkeys, quail and nilgai antelope.

History and Regional Discoveries

In Raymondville stands the Willacy County Courthouse, completed in 1923. It is a three-story brick building in the Neoclassical style with ornaments made of light-colored cast stone. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017 and is also a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Another historic address is the Willacy County Historical Museum at 427 S 7th St, Raymondville, Texas 78580. Among other things, the museum displays bedroom furniture, artwork, windows and doors from Mifflin Kenedy’s residence, as well as a bulletproof vest worn by him.

The region’s history also includes a shipwreck from 1554: A fleet of twenty ships was wrecked off South Padre Island. The island lies within the present-day boundaries of Willacy County. Local traditions are also reflected in the Willacy County Livestock Show during the last week of January, the Wild and Willacy Heritage and Nature Festival in autumn, and the Port Mansfield Harbor Market on the first Saturday of each month from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 600 Mansfield Drive in Port Mansfield. Restaurants in Port Mansfield serve fish, seafood, burgers and Texas barbecue; some also prepare fish caught by their guests themselves.

Which Starting Point Suits Your Trip?

If you want to focus on water, boat tours and wildlife observation, you should include Port Mansfield as a search term when choosing accommodation. For historical impressions, museum visits and the nine-hole golf course, Raymondville is a suitable focus instead. A small airport is available to visitors who want to fly to the fishing community of Port Mansfield. The first of three improvement phases has been launched at Laguna Point Park to improve public access to Laguna Madre for recreational purposes. This allows you to choose your vacation rental or holiday home based on whether nature, maritime activities, history or a combination of these should shape your holiday.
