Kerr County combines the Guadalupe River with rolling to hilly terrain and a diverse range of nature and cultural experiences. The county is drained by the Guadalupe River and its tributaries; elevations range from 1,500 to 2,000 feet above sea level. For your trip planning, this creates an interesting mix of waterfront trails, landscape experiences, regional history, and art.

Nature and Outdoor Activities along the Guadalupe River

Kerrville-Schreiner Park is a key starting point for active days: all trails there are multi-use trails for hiking and cycling and are currently open for use. The River Trail is an approximately six-mile public trail for walking and cycling along the Guadalupe River. Access points are available at Kerrville-Schreiner Park, G Street, Lehmann & Monroe Park, Louise Hays Park, Riverside Nature Center, Lowry Park, and the Dietert Center. If you want to keep your daily plans flexible, you can take these different access points into account when choosing your excursions.

One restriction is important for current planning: river access at Riverside from Kerrville-Schreiner Park is currently unavailable. During the peak season, boat and bicycle rentals are available at Louise Hays Park and Kerrville-Schreiner Park. The 23.5-acre Flat Rock Park is used by kayakers, joggers, cyclists, and hikers. Riverside Nature Center complements the offerings with birdwatching, wildflower walks, a butterfly garden, a nature trail, and access to the River Trail. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The county's wildlife and plant life also shape its character. The Kerr Wildlife Management Area encompasses 6,459 acres of Edwards Plateau habitat at the headwaters of the North Fork of the Guadalupe River. White-tailed deer, northern bobwhites, peccaries, wild turkeys, reptiles, and migratory birds are among the species found there.

History, Art, and Regional Events

Tours are offered there on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; they begin on the half-hour, with the last tour starting at 1:30 p.m. The Heart of the Hills Heritage Center opened to the public on May 9, 2026, and presents the cultural heritage and history of Kerr County and the Texas Hill Country through exhibitions and educational programs.

Front Porch Friday at the Heart of the Hills Heritage Center offers a special opportunity. The free community event takes place on the first Friday of every month and includes access to exhibitions, live music, food sales, and activities focused on a different historical or cultural topic each time. As a collecting institution and research center, the Kerr Regional History Center focuses on the history of Kerr County and genealogical data.

Art and music are also part of the region's profile. The Kerrville Folk Festival was founded by Rod Kennedy in 1972 and takes place at Quiet Valley Ranch in the Texas Hill Country, nine miles south of Kerrville. Stonehenge II was created as an art project and moved stone by stone to its current location beside the Guadalupe River on the campus of the Hill Country Arts Foundation. The Museum of Western Art is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and promoting the cultural heritage of the West and offers educational programs as well as cultural enrichment. At the Texas Arts and Crafts Fair, you can experience art demonstrations and other recreational and educational activities; the event also combines art with food, live music, and craft beer.
