Lakes, Parks and Nature Experiences
Richland Chambers Reservoir is located on Richland and Chambers Creeks, southeast to east-southeast of Corsicana along U.S. Highway 287. Recreational activities are possible there; the fishing opportunities mentioned in particular include catfish, crappie, White Bass and hybrid striped bass.
Another landscape perspective is offered by Navarro Mills Lake. It is located north of Texas Highway 31 between Waco and Corsicana. The lake offers very good opportunities for fishing for White Crappie and catfish; fishing for White Bass is sometimes very good there. Liberty Hill Park and Pecan Point Park are located on Navarro Mills Lake. Liberty Hill offers camping facilities, boat ramps, a fishing pier and a swimming beach. The park is also considered a good place for observing wildflowers and can be reached via State Highway 31, Dawson and FM 709.
Pecan Point also offers camping facilities and is suitable for observing wildflowers. Guests can go birdwatching there year-round, and the park also provides diverse habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Wolf Creek Park has 50 sites with water and electricity hookups, 22 sites without electricity, two double sites and one group site. There is also a fishing pier and a two-lane boat ramp with a dock. Note the special regulation at Oak Park: the swimming beach is reserved exclusively for registered campers; Oak Park Day Use is a separate park for day visitors.
History of Settlement, Oil and Remembrance
Navarro County also offers an unusually large number of starting points for excursions into cultural history. The Pearce Museum's Civil War collection comprises more than 15,000 documents. In Corsicana, Petroleum Park and the Magnolia Oil Refinery mark the early history of oil production in Texas. Petroleum Park is located at the site of the first oil discovery in Texas, which led to commercial oil production in 1894 while drilling for water. In 1898, the Magnolia Oil Refinery was the site of the first commercial oil refinery in Texas. Exxon Mobil, the successor to Magnolia Petroleum and Mobil Oil, continues to preserve one of the refinery's four original brick-lined furnaces. Corsicana was designated an official Texas Main Street city in 1985. As a complementary location, Corsicana can therefore be included in your travel plans.
The area's earlier settlement history is visible in several places. Spring Hill is considered the oldest settlement in Navarro County. Its springs supplied Indigenous groups with water for centuries before white settlers arrived. A cemetery and several foundations along abandoned roads still mark the site of the former settlement. The historic area of Navarro Mills Community is marked by a cemetery, a Baptist church founded in 1901 and a tabernacle built in 1915.
Cemeteries also preserve traces of the region's past. Long Prairie Cemetery is designated a Historic Texas Cemetery; graves of veterans from conflicts dating back to the American Civil War are located there. At the former settlement site of Liberty Hill, a cemetery marks an Anglo-American community that emerged in the decade after the 1838 Battle Creek Massacre. The cemetery is located one mile west of the site. The U.S. AAF Cadet Memorial covers five acres of land with a central memorial walkway.
