Mitchell County combines waterways, ranch history, and historic places into a diverse travel destination in Texas. Lake Colorado City is located on Morgan Creek. Champion Creek Reservoir is located on Champion Creek in Mitchell County, seven miles south of Colorado City. Families traveling in the area can plan a variety of days: one day can focus on the landscape around the water, while another can explore the history of settlements, ranches, and former industries.

Lakeside Landscapes and Paths Through History

Champion Creek Reservoir features a distinctive shoreline landscape with deep, rocky bluffs, rock outcrops, shoreline structures, underwater rises, and several old dams. On the Colorado Headwaters Loop, Fisher Park/Champion Lake is a daily-open stop with developed camping facilities. For a trip focused on nature and water, this site provides a clear reference point for planning the day. Picnic Overlook also offers a good view of the lake.

The name Seven Wells also tells a story of how the landscape has changed. The area was once a spring site and is now covered by Lake Champion. For centuries, Seven Wells served as a camping site for Indigenous groups; in the 1880s, the early settlement of Artesia was established there in Mitchell County. This connection between landscape and settlement history makes the site especially interesting for travelers who want to learn not only about a body of water but also about the area's historical layers.

Colorado City and Historic Buildings

Colorado City was founded in 1880 at the intersection of the Colorado River and the route of the Texas & Pacific Railroad. Colorado City offers many points of cultural and historical interest. The Heritage House Museum is located in the city's first brick house. The E.M. Hardigree Home, built in 1890, is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The John C. Prude Home, built in 1907, is a brick house influenced by the Prairie Style. The Majors Home, built in 1883, is also among the early brick houses.

Other notable points of interest include All Saints' Church, built in 1885 and dedicated as All Saints in 1886, as well as its original bell, which is still in use. More than 5,000 citizens are buried at Colorado City Cemetery, a Historic Texas Cemetery; the oldest grave dates from April 29, 1881. In the center of town, a mural displays more than 200 livestock brands from ranches in Mitchell County. The Colorado City Opera House, built in 1899, is one of the state's oldest music venues. The Heart of West Texas Museum is located in a restored historic mansion in downtown Colorado City.

Travelers who want to deliberately include the urban part of the destination can consider Colorado City as a separate focus of their trip planning. The historic buildings, museum, mural, and cemetery offer different points of emphasis, without requiring every travel day to follow the same pattern.

Ranch, Oil, and Railroad History

Mitchell County also preserves traces of ranching and oil history. The 96 Ranch was founded by James Durham Wulfjen and is considered one of the area's significant early ranches. A cabin was built there near the Colorado River on the site of a former buffalo hunters' camp. The site of the Coleman Ranch Field Discovery Well recalls the beginnings of oil production in the Permian Basin. West of Colorado City, the West Texas Refinery Company, known as the Col-Tex Refinery, opened in 1924 to process oil from Mitchell County. The name Lone Wolf Mountain refers to a Kiowa chief.

Smaller historical connections also add to the picture. The structure at the site of Westbrook School and Church was built by local settlers in 1890, when Westbrook was only a stop on the Texas & Pacific Line. First Baptist Church contains preserved materials from its original site, which were used for rafters and ceiling beams; its interior brick walls are made of bricks from the former boiler house of the Colorado City Salt Works. In 1965, the Colorado City Frontier Roundup and the Tumbleweed Festival were designated as annual events in Mitchell County.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans?

When searching for a vacation rental or vacation home in Mitchell County, it helps to first determine your preferred focus. If lakeside scenery and time by the water are important, Lake Colorado City, Champion Creek Reservoir, Fisher Park/Champion Lake, and Picnic Overlook can guide your planning. For days centered on cultural and historical attractions, planning around Colorado City with its museums, historic homes, churches, cemetery, opera house, and mural may be more suitable. Travelers interested in ranching and industrial history can also include the 96 Ranch, the Coleman Ranch site, and the former Col-Tex Refinery. This allows you to choose your accommodation based on the planned mix of landscape, history, and shared discoveries rather than on a single element of the trip.
