Those who want to experience coastal landscapes from more than just the beach will find numerous opportunities for nature observation and water activities in Matagorda County.
The Matagorda County Birding Nature Center covers 38 acres with walking trails, ponds, wetlands, picnic areas and diverse wildlife. At the eastern end, there is an observation platform as well as access to the Colorado River for canoes and kayaks. Wading birds, shorebirds and neotropical migratory birds can be found year-round in the Mad Island Wildlife Management Area. The Nature Conservancy’s Clive Runnells Family Mad Island Marsh Preserve also includes coastal prairie, freshwater wetlands and salt marshes, providing habitat for more than 250 bird species to nest, feed, rest and sleep. The Great Texas Birding Trail complements these nature experiences with numerous observation sites.
Explore the Coast at Your Own Pace
Matagorda Beach stretches for approximately 58 miles. Twenty-three miles east of the Colorado River are open to vehicles, while the remaining 35 miles west of the river can only be reached by boat, kayak, canoe or other watercraft. The East Matagorda Peninsula CMA also has clearly described access: From Matagorda, FM 2031 runs south to the beach; from there, depending on the access point, continue approximately 2 to 3 miles east along the beach. These different access conditions are an important consideration when choosing a vacation rental or vacation home based on your planned coastal and water activities.
For anglers, Big Boggy National Wildlife Refuge offers another option. Fishing is possible in the navigable waters of Boggy Creek, which can be reached by boat from the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Rio is also a public 18-hole golf course with a championship layout on the Colorado River.
History and Local Discoveries
The City by the Sea Museum displays artifacts and replicas of the Karankawa, as well as three murals about their lives. Another exhibit focuses on Palacios’ role in the excavation of the La Belle and presents recovered artifacts as well as a feature-length film. Behind the Palacios Educational Pavilion, La Petite Belle is on display, a seaworthy half-scale replica of the La Belle.
Historic buildings also give Matagorda County its own character. Matagorda Cemetery is one of the earliest cemeteries in Texas and was established around 1829 as part of Stephen F. Austin’s colony. The Blessing Hotel was built in 1906 for land seekers and as the residence of developers Jonathan E. Pierce and Abel B. Pierce; it has been listed as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 1965. The Bay City U.S.O. Building is the only surviving one of five U.S.O. buildings on the Gulf Coast that were built at the beginning of the war.
In the Matagorda County Museum building, which opened to the public as a federal post office on May 15, 1918, and reopened after extensive renovation in 1992, a small town from the period between 1890 and 1910 is recreated with fully furnished, interactive areas. These include a schoolhouse, a general store and a post office. Bay City’s Market Day takes place around the Courthouse Square on the third Saturday of each month from March through December and features more than 100 booths offering arts and crafts, jewelry, antiques and handcrafted foods. The Taste of Palacios Seafood Festival focuses on fresh seafood, Texas Gulf Coast farmed oysters, local culinary talent, live music, children’s activities and waterfront experiences.
