Historic Buildings and Their Stories
The Hamilton County Historical Museum is housed in the former Hamilton County jail. It is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or by appointment. Check the opening hours before your visit, as operating details may change.
The Hamilton County Courthouse was originally built in 1887 and remodeled in 1932 with modernization and expansion work. Its interior features a two-story courtroom, curved oak-veneer wall paneling, schoolhouse-style pendant lights, and a shallow barrel-vaulted ceiling. The limestone walls are said to be made from locally quarried limestone. Cast-stone medallions above the four side entrances depict frontier motifs, including a cowboy, a sheep, and a shorthorn breed of cattle.
The Bulman Bridge also tells a story of the county’s history: the King Bridge Company was commissioned to build it for Hamilton County in 1884. The bridge was later moved to Pecan Creek Recreation Park and restored. In Hamilton, the Presbyterian Church was the first frame church to be built. It was moved intact from its original location at 119 South College Avenue and incorporated into the present building in 1947. Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church, in turn, combines Gothic architecture with a dedication in 1896.
Hico: Museums, History, and Activities
In Hico, the Billy the Kid Museum displays artifacts and shares the story of Billy the Kid. The Hico Retrospective Museum is located upstairs at Blue Star Trading. Historical photographs and artifacts are on display there, and the museum also serves as an event venue.
Old Hico on Honey Creek marks the beginning of Hico’s settlement in 1856. A monument stands at Old Hico, built with stones from the ruins of the old mill. John R. Alford, a merchant, became the first postmaster in 1860. These different dates give the town’s history a concrete framework without merging them into a single event.
Along the Bosque River, a tree-lined walking trail follows the river, and covered picnic tables overlook the water. An 18-hole disc golf course is surrounded by large pecan trees, overlooks the Bosque River, and is more than 6,000 feet long. Hico also has a climbing gym in a converted grain silo. It offers indoor and outdoor climbing, an obstacle course, a low ropes course, and a zip line.
