Clinton County combines expansive natural areas with regional history and distinctive event traditions. Between river valleys, wooded mountains and historic places, you will find very different ideas for a vacation: viewpoints and hiking trails, tranquil paddling routes, museums, theaters, regional markets and insights into Amish life. When choosing a vacation rental or holiday home, it helps to decide on your preferred focus before the trip.

Nature between River, Forest and Rock

One defining natural area is Kettle Creek State Park in western Clinton County. It encompasses 1,793 acres along Kettle Creek and lies in a valley surrounded by mountainous terrain and wilderness. From May through October, the park offers a variety of programs. Ravensburg State Park also features a distinctive landscape: there, Rauchtown Run has carved a steep-walled gorge, along whose spring-fed stream a northern hardwood forest grows. The tall sandstone towers of Castle Rocks, formed by erosion, are visible from the Mid State Trail.

For expansive panoramas, Hyner View State Park makes a suitable destination in its own right. The overlook offers upstream and downstream views across the West Branch Susquehanna River and the surrounding mountains. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Hang gliders also launch from the ramp at the overlook and glide over the river—an unusual sight for anyone who enjoys combining their trip with special landscape experiences.

Trails for Active and Relaxing Vacation Days

The selection ranges from short routes to larger undertakings. The Lock Haven Levee Trail is a flat, 2.25-mile paved path on the levee in Lock Haven. It runs with scenic views from Lock Haven University to Piper Memorial Airport. The Lockport Loop Trail, by contrast, offers a 2.4-mile paddling route on the calm, lake-like waters of the West Branch Susquehanna River above the Grant Street Dam.

The Wayne Township Nature Park Trail near McElhattan is an easy, family-friendly, year-round 1.7-mile loop trail. Interpretive signs explain the ecology of the surrounding area. For longer outings, the Bloody Skillet ATV & Hiking Trail is suitable as a 44.6-mile loop for off-road driving and hiking. The Bald Eagle Valley Trail is still under development: Four of the six construction phases are currently complete, together totaling slightly more than six miles of trail. Overall, the scenic trail is planned to be approximately 11.7 miles long and serve hikers and cyclists. A connection between several communities is also planned, as well as a link at the Jersey Shore trailhead to the Pine Creek Valley Rail Trail.

History, Theater and Regional Traditions

The Clinton County Historical Society conveys the county's history through free programs, special exhibitions, community events, history camps and children's programs. The Victorian Heisey House Museum contains its main offices, research facilities and resources on county history. The Sugar Valley Historical Society Museum preserves more than 1,400 cataloged objects relating to the history of Sugar Valley, as well as a genealogy and resource room. Visitors and groups are received there by prior appointment only.

The theater scene is also part of the region's profile. Millbrook Playhouse is a traditional summer theater with a 235-seat Main Stage and a 100-seat Cabaret Theatre. The Educational Theatre Program includes a spring production in mid-May as well as one or two summer productions from June through August. The Piper Aviation Museum serves as an educational tool for conveying the influence of the Piper Aircraft Corporation on the nation. At Bull Run School, visitors can learn about the history of Sugar Valley and the former operation of a one-room schoolhouse.

Amish Culture, Festivals and Local Products

In southern Clinton County, Sugar Valley and Nittany Valley are home to a large Amish population. Amish-owned shops offer fresh garden produce, handmade quilts, custom wooden furniture and leather goods. A scenic drive leads from Route 64 through Mill Hall and Lamar via Narrows Road along Fishing Creek, and then via Route 880 to Loganton. Along the way are farmland landscapes, mountains, Amish produce stands and craft shops.

The Pennsylvania State Flaming Foliage Festival has a history spanning more than 75 years. The program includes the crowning of a festival queen, an arts and crafts exhibition, a parade and a Follies talent show. The festival comprises three full days with more than 150 crafters, exhibitors, food vendors and rides. Wine in the Wilds began in 2015 at Castanea Fairgrounds and was later expanded to the Clinton County Fairgrounds. There, wineries, wines, cider, brewed beverages, exhibitors and live music are part of the offering.

The Right Location Guide for Your Trip

For further planning, you can combine different travel ideas: nature programs and viewpoints, short trails and paddling routes, historical attractions or regional events. The Bucktail Trail Scenic Byway runs from Lock Haven through Clinton County along the Susquehanna River and the mountains. Rauchtown Run and its tributaries offer coldwater fishing for wild brook trout and native brook trout. Direct location guidance is complemented by Mill Hall, Renovo, Lock Haven and Westport. This allows you to tailor your accommodation search to the experiences you actually want to include during your stay.
