Jefferson County combines lakes, streams, forests, farmland, and rail trails with an unusually diverse museum and events culture. Those planning a trip can combine experiences in nature, technological history, and regional traditions here. When choosing a vacation rental or holiday home, it is therefore worth deciding on your personal focus first: Is the main aim to explore trails and water, visit museums, or attend special events?

Nature, Water, and Trails

Clear Creek State Park covers 1,901 acres and provides access to the Clarion River for fishing and boating. The park also includes a nature museum with exhibits on logging and nature, which is open from spring through fall. The self-guided Ox Shoe Trail is a one-hour hiking trail that conveys the history of logging in the region. Another connection between landscape and history is offered by the two-mile Beartown Rocks Trail, which connects Beartown Rocks with Clear Creek State Park.

Scripture Rocks Park also adds a cultural accent to the landscape. The free-to-access site is open from sunrise to sunset from April through October. Along 1.5 miles of gravel-covered paths are more than 60 boulders with carvings referring to the philosophy and life trials of Douglas Stahlman from the early 20th century.

For longer distances, the 15-mile Mahoning Shadow Trail is available. The rails-to-trails route follows the historic corridor of the Pennsylvania Railroad along Mahoning Creek. The annual Mahoning Shadow Shuffle takes place on it, featuring a half marathon as well as 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer races. The Piney ATV Trail is a 24-mile, privately owned multi-use route from Brookville to Piney Reservoir along a former railway line.

Museums and Regional History

The Greenberg Cadillac Museum displays Cadillac memorabilia collected over many decades. In 2026, the museum can be visited on selected weekends, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Those interested in technology will find hundreds of stationary engines in more than 35 buildings and outdoor areas at the Coolspring Power Museum. Permanent exhibits include stationary gas and hot-air engines as well as other types of engines ranging in output from a fraction of one horsepower to 600 horsepower. The museum also explains the development of internal-combustion engine technology.

The restored Snyder Hill Schoolhouse is accessible to individuals or guided tours by appointment. Many original Bowdish pieces can be viewed year-round at the Jefferson County History Center; they are supplemented by replicas of his buildings as well as animated figures and sets created by volunteers. The “Lumber Heritage” exhibit covers the logging and rafting history of Jefferson County in the early 19th century. It includes the sections “Logging & Rafting,” “Dinkies & Dams,” and “A Model Raft.”

Traditions and Practical Trip Planning

The Bowdish model railroad scene operates on the last Saturday of each month, with volunteers available to answer questions. The Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center is currently open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offers free parking. Since 1886, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club has celebrated and preserved Groundhog Day and the legend of Punxsutawney Phil every February 2 as well as throughout the year. Thousands of tourists come to Gobbler’s Knob on this date to witness Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction. In September, the club also hosts its Annual Groundhog Club Picnic there every year.

Interstate 80, the Keystone Shortway, is also relevant for navigating the county: It crosses Jefferson County for 36 miles from west to east and has four interchanges with major state and federal highways.

Choose your accommodation according to the type of trip you want: A trip focused on nature and trails requires different daily planning than a series of museum visits and events. A vacation rental or holiday home can serve as a starting point for your personal selection without individual attractions automatically being associated with a particular accommodation. This leaves room for your own rhythm between exhibitions, historic sites, water, and longer trails.

More places for trip planning: Brookville, Punxsutawney and Brockway. More destinations in the same broader area: Armstrong, Franklin, Greene County, Montgomery and Elk County.
