Gilliam County brings together the gently rolling golden wheat fields around Condon, river landscapes, historic towns, and outdoor experiences. From Condon, views extend to the Cascade Range. The Cottonwood Canyon State Park on the John Day River, located between Gilliam and Sherman counties, has a different character. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, start by considering whether the landscape around Condon, activities on the water, or historic sites will shape your stay.

Wheat Fields and Canyons Along the John Day River

Condon is surrounded by miles of wheat fields, with views of the Cascade Range adding a broad mountain backdrop to the open agricultural landscape. At Cottonwood Canyon State Park, the John Day River flows through a different setting: It reaches the park after 70 miles through deep canyons and BLM wilderness areas. The park covers more than 8,000 acres of river-carved vertical cliffs, side canyons, and dry, rocky grasslands. The contrast between fields and canyon country gives the trip different nature themes, without reducing them to a single place.

Hiking, Biking, and Water Activities

At Cottonwood Canyon State Park, the Pinnacles Trail offers a clearly defined route: It runs 4.3 miles one way downstream along the John Day River. The Lost Corral Trail is open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. At the J.S. Burres day-use area, there is a launch site for rafts, kayaks, canoes, and drift boats. These options offer different kinds of experiences—a specified trail distance, a route for multiple user groups, or a trip on the water. Anglers can catch steelhead trout, catfish, and bass in the park area; species and applicable regulations may change, so it’s worth checking the current rules in advance.

Wildlife watching is another possible experience in the park. Species you may see there include Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, pronghorn, coyotes, white-tailed jackrabbits, and bighorn sheep; sightings are not guaranteed. In Arlington and at its marina, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and stand-up paddleboarding are possible on the Columbia River. At Earl Snell Memorial Park, a sandy beach has a sheltered spot to launch paddleboards, as well as swimming access to a floating dock. You can choose between trails through canyon country and activities on the river.

Explore Towns and Stories

The John Day Crossing Historic Site marks the place where two branches of the Oregon Trail came together at the crossing of the John Day River. A marked path along the road above the site leads a quarter mile to a small interpretive site. From there, you can see the approach to the river crossing. The Gilliam County Historical Museum Complex includes a 1884 homestead and a 1905 railroad depot among its historic buildings; furnished interiors show different eras.

Lonerock also tells stories of earlier times: The town was first settled in 1881 and was nearly deserted by World War I. The Methodist Church dates from 1898 and is still used for weddings and other special events. In Condon, Main Street is listed as a National Historical Site. These stops offer different ways to explore history—from the route of the Oregon Trail to preserved buildings and the development of a town.

Different Experiences in Condon and Arlington

Condon hosts the annual Fabulous Fourth of July celebration. The listed events include a parade and a soapbox derby; the program may vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around the celebration, check the current dates and program details. Condon also has a well-maintained 9-hole golf course that is open to residents and visitors. It operates on a pay-and-play basis, with no tee times or dress code. Since fees and operations may change, confirm the current conditions before visiting.

Arlington marks the western end of the Blue Mountain Scenic Byway and offers a different focus with activities on the Columbia River. When choosing a vacation rental, it’s helpful to prioritize the experiences that matter most to you and compare the location of a specific rental with your planned outings. This way, your search reflects your travel plans rather than a single idea of Gilliam County.
