Those who enjoy spending time outdoors will find a 70-acre park in Gold Hill at Gold Hill Mines Historic Park. It offers several miles of trails for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. The Gold Hill Rail Trail connects the historic town of Gold Hill, a restored mining town, with the original narrow-gauge railway branch line from the 1880s. Eagle Point Nature Preserve offers just over three miles of trails, as well as canoe access to High Rock Lake. Bald eagles use the preserve's waters, particularly Goldeneye Cove, as fishing grounds. Dunn's Mountain Park encompasses 83 acres of land protected by a conservation easement.
Urban Discoveries and Special Experiences
The History and Art Trail uses markers arranged into five major historical periods. You can experience the trail from any point and do not have to follow a prescribed order. The F&M Bank Trolley offers narrated tours through downtown Salisbury. In October, OctoberTour opens ten private homes and two significant landmarks. The tour has been held for 42 years and is one of the oldest annual historic home tours in the southern United States.
For further animal-related experiences, there are Tiger World and Parakeet Jungle. Tiger World is a nonprofit center for animal welfare and education dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and preservation of exotic animals. Educational tours personally guide visitors through the sanctuary. At Parakeet Jungle, you can feed and interact with Australian parakeets in a walk-through interactive habitat. Art enthusiasts will find a sculpture courtyard and three changing exhibitions each year at the Waterworks Visual Arts Center.
