Orange: Nature, History, and Flavors in North Carolina
Accommodation in Orange
Orange combines river and forest landscapes with a remarkable concentration of historic sites and a lively market scene. In Orange County, you can explore the Eno River and its access areas, follow trails through wooded natural areas, or learn about the region’s history. Local produce and crafts are also part of the experience. So when choosing a vacation rental, a good first question is which of these experiences you want to shape your stay.
River, Forest, and Trails
Eno River State Park is located in Durham and Orange counties and stretches along the Eno River, with seven access areas. At Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, trails wind through forests of mountain laurel and rhododendrons. A viewpoint at the summit offers views of the sunset. Two quiet fishing ponds complement the nearby Eno River. Together, these places showcase different sides of the landscape: the river as a connecting feature, and forests and viewpoints as other destinations for spending time outdoors.
The Riverwalk is a paved, accessible urban greenway along the Eno River. It runs for almost two miles from Dimmocks Mill Road or Gold Park, through West Hillsborough and downtown, to the trails on the Occoneechee Speedway grounds. Its route links the riverbank and urban areas in one continuous path. As access conditions may change, it’s a good idea to check them before your visit.
The North Carolina Botanical Garden offers more than its display gardens of native plants: beyond them lies an 88-acre forest. Three miles of trails run alongside streams and wind around hills. If you’d like to experience nature in different ways, you’ll find gardens and wooded trails here, alongside the river and viewpoints, each with its own appeal.
Local History and Distinctive Sites
Several places in Hillsborough recall different chapters of history. Ayr Mount is a Federal-era mansion built by William Kirkland in Hillsborough, North Carolina, in 1815. The historic site also features scenic trails and grounds. The Burwell School Historic Site preserves the location of one of North Carolina’s earliest schools for girls, the Burwell Academy for Young Ladies. The grounds include the Burwell residence, an original brick classroom building, a rare brick outbuilding, and formal gardens.
The Old Orange County Courthouse dates to 1844. Local builder John Berry designed and built the structure in the Greek Revival style. The Historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail offers a different historical perspective: it follows the only surviving dirt racetrack from the first NASCAR season in 1949. The 44-acre site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 2002. Today, hikers, joggers, and other people who exercise use the trail.
The Occaneechi Village Replica Site recreates a 17th-century Occaneechi village near the location of an actual village of the tribe from about 300 years ago. The Occaneechi Replica Village depicts what an Occaneechi village is believed to have looked like in 1701. It is located on the Riverwalk in River Park, behind the Farmers’ Market Pavilion, and reopened to the public in November 2025. As this date does not guarantee current access, check the latest access information before your visit.
Blackwood Farm Park also brings history to life through its buildings: it preserves a historic farmhouse, barn, smokehouse, corn crib, and other outbuildings. After more than a year of construction, the park fully reopened in May 2023, with the addition of an outdoor amphitheater and an educational trail.
Markets and Getting Your Bearings in the Region
The Eno River Farmers Market is located in downtown Hillsborough. It offers fresh farm produce, cheese, pasture-raised meat and eggs, local craft beer, wood-fired baked goods, prepared foods, and fermented foods; crafts by local makers are also part of the selection. The market program includes live music, storytelling, arts and crafts activities, and cooking demonstrations. The program may change, so check the latest schedule for your visit. Orange County is also home to well over 600 farms, whose products can be bought directly at the farm, in stores, or at farmers’ markets.
Orange County is near Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh, with access to cultural, entertainment, shopping, and sports options throughout the region. If there are specific places you plan to visit, consider their exact locations when choosing your vacation rental.
